Although they didn't enjoy commercial success with the influential all-girl group the Runaways, both Joan Jett and Lita Ford conquered the charts on their own at various points of the '80s. While Jett's solo material initially reflected her admiration of punk rock before honing in on mainstream hard rock, Ford was initially a metalhead, before she too had a mainstream rock makeover, as evidenced by the Kiss Me Deadly best-of. The problem with this set is that, at only ten tracks in length, it only focuses on Ford's latter material (nothing from 1983's Out for Blood or 1984's Dancin' On the Edge is included, which many longtime fans consider her best albums), and it even manages to screw that up, as her biggest hit single, the Ozzy Osbourne duet "Close My Eyes Forever," is mysteriously absent. And while several expected favorites from Ford's most renowned albums (circa 1988-1991) are included -- the Loverboy-ish "Kiss Me Deadly," the ballad "Lisa," a cover of Alice Cooper's "Only Women Bleed," etc. -- what's the point if her biggest hit from the era is missing? There are other better-assembled Ford collections out there (1992's Best of Lita Ford, etc.). ~ Greg Prato Best Of Lita Ford: Kiss Me Deadly Music Best Of Lita Ford: Kiss Me Deadly Songs Best Of Lita Ford: Kiss Me Deadly Review

Best Of Lita Ford: Kiss Me Deadly songs
$16.45 The second volume of Suicidal's Friends and Family compilation series assembles more grooves from Suicidal Tendencies and its extended family. Kicking off with the title track to ST's Free Your Soul...And Save My Mind, it moves quickly into the previously unreleased "Fight the Losing Battle," which works the classic funk-thrash model to a tee. After a few tightly-wound funk numbers from Infectious Grooves (including an instrumental), there's some ridiculousness from Jeremiah Weed and the Bad Seed, which returns at the end of the disc for a hokey closing bit. In between, there are two amazing tracks from Missile Girl Scoot, the Japanese compatriots of Suicidal who mix punk, thrash, and pop as only the Japanese can. "Big Mouth" even finds a way to mash churning metal into chirpy, third wave ska. Friends and Family's second half is given over to guest shots from other Suicidal artists. Of these, two previously unreleased tracks from My Head seem to be the standout. Overall, Friends is pretty enjoyable. It provides a nice primer for where the label is now, and gives longtime fans a wealth of rare material. Ideally, the label's next project should be a domestically-issued Missile Girl Scoot album. ~ Johnny Loftus

Best Of Lita Ford: Kiss Me Deadly album
$9.79 The Northern soul fanatics have revived many a tune, and sometimes a career or two, collecting tremendous soulful treasures that are mostly obscure and -- for the most part -- that definitely deserved a better fate first time around. Sure, the Supremes take on legendary songwriter/producer Buddy Buie's answer to Bobby Hebb's "Sunny" only showed up on 1987's the Supremes Never Before Released Masters with a different mix on The Supremes Box Set, but the impeccable taste of the fan base brings this production to life on the dancefloors and on these compilations so the world can "bring back those sunny days." Now some of these compilations -- like this one -- are legit while a variety of them are truly gray area (but no less essential!) The sonics and some of the fades on this package from Universal Music Operations, Ltd, licensed to Spectrum, could have been mastered with a bit more care, especially since these Uni catalog pieces appear to be direct competition to similar compilations the Warner group is also generating to put music they control back into circulation via this genre. You may never have heard Earl Van Dyke's instrumental "6 x 6," but that's one of the surprises that awaits; and as fun as "Learning to Trust My Man" by Sisters Love is, it sounds like it was lifted off ...
