The budget Extended Versions series has been a mixed bag from the jump. The title implies one thing, but what it actually means is another. It simply means "live versions." Live records are always iffy propositions. Sometimes they are, but more often they've been doctored significantly in the studio and a live version can be significantly different from the familiar studio track. And while it's true they can be longer than those on a studio album, it's not always the case. Hot Tuna's edition is a case in point. Recorded all through the '70s and taken form official live sources, from acoustic to electric dates, this is one of the few titles in this series that's actually worth it. There are terrific acoustic readings of "I Know You Rider," "Death Don't Have No Mercy," "Uncle Sam Blues," and "Embryonic Journey." The electric cuts smoke too: the wooly, loose "Funky 17," "Genesis," (this version is significantly different and seems to mean something else as well), and "I Wish You Would." This is a killer little compilation of Hot Tuna at their best. ~ Thom Jurek Hot Tuna Extended Versions Songs Extended Versions Review

Extended Versions album
$10.45 "Here In Angola," "Pandora," and "Indian Summer" were originally released on the LP INDIAN SUMMER.
24 CARROTS is folk-rocker Al Stewart's 1980 album, recorded with Shot in the Dark. This reissue features five bonus tracks, "Here in Angola", "Indian Summer", "Pandora", "Delia's Gone", and "Princess Olivia".
The pun of the title of 24 Carrots -- the first overt signal of humor Al Stewart has displayed in years, possibly ever -- illustrates that a lot has changed since 1978's Time Passages. The loosening of his wit is perhaps the most evident, but the most ...

| | Doors Soft Parade CD (1969) Gold; Remastered
Extended Versions CD music
$20.29 Dismissed by the benighted as the Doors' "pop album," SOFT PARADE is one of the band's most adventurous recordings, utilizing strings and horns without resorting to schlocky over-production and moving far beyond their blues roots. Morrison was fully into his shaman phase by 1969, and his obsession with that image is reflected in the proselytizing air of "Tell All the People," and of course "Shaman's Blues." The album's biggest hit "Touch Me," while easily the group's most radio-friendly offering, is a pop classic that ranks among the great '60s AM radio tunes. "Wild Child" is a brief return to the blues-rock of yore, but the title track is a sophisticated, extended piece that moves through several different moods and textures, full of the elliptical, poetic lyrics that were Morrison's trademark.
The weakest studio album recorded with Jim Morrison in the group, partially because their experiments with brass and ...

| | Cliff Richard Take Me High CD (1973) Import; Remastered
Extended Versions CD music
$14.29 A popular rocker in the U.K., Cliff Richard is known as much for his strong Christian beliefs as for his rock & roll music. TAKE ME HIGH is presented here with an additional six songs included.
Take Me High was the soundtrack to another in the growing parade of blink-and-you'll-miss-it musical movies that Cliff Richard had been making since the mid-'60s, although its timing could scarcely have been better. Early 1973 saw him score his biggest U.K. hit in five years, when "Power to All Our Friends" rose to number four. Unfortunately, it wasn't a part of the album, and so the opportunity to capitalize on the smash passed by, and his next 45, the movie's own title track, fizzled at a lowly number 29. Neither did it deserve much better. Little about the album appealed, from its tawdry cover art on to the soulless succession of lightweight Tony Cole ballads that were the heart of the soundtrack. Indeed, Richard himself apparently acknowledged this by piling a couple of instrumentals into the fray for the first time since his days with the Shadows. The difference was, of course, was that the anonymous sidemen who backed him up were not the Shadows. It should also be noted that former Doctor Who girl Debbie Watling, Richard's co-star and occasional singing partner, was a great actress, but she was no Una Stubbs in the vocal department. Released as Hot Property in the U.S., Take Me High was a failure at the box office and didn't do much better in the record stores. Cliff Richard's darkest hour was not over yet. ~ Dave Thompson
