Holly Hofmann is one of the top flautists in jazz, though she was classically trained. Joined by pianist Mike Wofford (who is also her husband), bassist Peter Washington and drummer Victor Lewis, she kicks off with a mini-tribute to the late Ray Brown. Brown's samba arrangement of Cole Porter's "Everything I Love" and his own funky "CRS-Craft" (the first part a hilarious acronym for "Can't Remember S -- t") feature Washington as well as the leader. "Minor Miracle" is a Hofmann-Wofford collaboration that mixes a complex theme with a strutting rhythm underneath. Hofmann and Wofford make magic with their duo interpretation of Antonio Carlos Jobim's "Samba de Aviao." She happily acknowledges her longtime producer's request for Ray Bryant's "Tonk" with a spirited interpretation. But she saves the most impressive tracks on the session for the end of the CD. They include the brilliant Afro-Cuban arrangement of Billy Strayhorn's "Johnny Come Lately," the haunting ballad "Minha" and her virtuoso playing in a brisk treatment of "Will You Still Be Mine?" Highly recommended! ~ Ken Dryden

$14.85 Over the years, bop has had its share of summit sessions -- that is, sessions in which three or four people are playing the same instrument. Prestige was big on summits in the '50s; back then, the label's A&R department seemed to be especially fond of tenor sax, alto sax, and trumpet summits. But flute summits have been a rarity in bop, which has a lot to do with the fact that the flute hasn't been among jazz's more prominent wind instruments; in jazz, flutists have always been greatly outnumbered by trumpeters and saxophonists. A rare example of a flute summit, First Date finds three flutists -- Frank Wess, Holly Hofmann, and Ali Ryerson -- forming a front line and joining forces with a rhythm section that consists of pianist Mike Wofford, bassist Peter Washington, and drummer Ben Riley. There are no saxophones, trumpets, clarinets, or trombones in the Flutology sextet -- just the all-flute front line and a rhythm section -- and this yields enjoyable results on three Wess compositions as ...

Minor Miracle album
$14.09 This is a Super Audio CD playable only on Super Audio CD players.
This ultracool saxman has some of the sexiest moves in smooth jazz and a dreadlock-based look that drives female genre fans wild. He's always focused on passionate, soprano-based tunes to express this sexuality in musical terms, so it's no surprise that one of the best tracks here is the power-passion ballad "Romantica." He's always been successful at adapting his lyrical sound and melodic sense to easy funk tunes, and here plays that middle of the road well on tracks like "Deska" (dedicated to his new bride Desi) and the soul classic "Wishing on a Star." But because we're so familiar with this side of his personality, it's always more fun to hear him fulfill a deeper potential, a bit outside the box. The ultragrooving, hip, and brassy title track, on which he blends soprano with tenor and slides over the baritone edges of Matt King, leads us to expect a slightly more swinging affair, but ...

Minor Miracle CD music
$15.39 It's hard to deny that saxophonist Gerald Albright often gave up playing "jazz" -- at least the snob definition -- in favor of urban radio and smooth jazz radio acceptance. During his years on the Atlantic label (1987-1997), his full-lengths ...

Minor Miracle CD music
$15.59 This the second release from the trio of Raoul Björkenheim, Ingebrigt Håker Flaten and Paal Nilssen-Love (the first came out billed to their individual names and was titled Scorch Trio). Luggumt was recorded two years later (January 2004) at the same studio, with the same engineer. Understandably, it sounds pretty close to the first one, although the music is not as scorching this time; there is more room to breathe, and a higher percentage of quiet(ish) passages, including the delicate drums/bass duet "Snaekje Rojnd Naevinj." Björkenheim is in very fine shape, switching from Hendrixian anthemic playing in the title track to Mahavishnu Orchestra-era McLaughlin speed-fusion in "Kjole Hole," the high-octane number of the set. That 15-minute chunk alone is worth the price of admission, with its sizzling guitar lines and thunderous rhythm section. Flaten and Nilssen-Love seem to grow ...
