The trio of pianist Randy Halberstadt, bassist Jeff Johnson, and drummer Gary Hobbs is based in the Pacific Northwest. On this outing, they perform a few swingers ("The Touch of Your Lips" and "Everything I Love"), engage in superior ballad playing ("In the Wee Small Hours of the Morning" and "Don't Forget the Poet"), and show off their wit on Thelonious Monk's "Well, You Needn't." Other highlights include Artie Shaw's "Moonray," the adventurous opening to "Invitation," and the trio's transformation of a familiar Chopin melody into jazz. In addition, Halberstadt takes Bill Evans' obscure "B Minor Waltz" as a piano solo. This modern mainstream jazz set has enough subtle surprises and variety to keep listeners interested and stimulated all the way through. Recommended. ~ Scott Yanow

Recorded primarily in New York City during the first half of 1992, the bracing EXOTICA sets aside the more overt thematic ties of many other Kip Hanrahan releases in favor of separate songs. As with all of his work, though, they are linked, mostly by the seductive rhythmic base given to all the music.
The opening "You Can Tell a Guy By His Anger" is one of the funkiest numbers ever to emerge from this always-evolving crew. Jack Bruce's singing is a delight on this song, as well as over the course of the whole album (he also plays bass throughout). He easily steps between dramatically impassioned exuberance and near-whispered pleas. Bruce and Hanrahan also co-wrote "G-d Is Great," recorded a year earlier in England. The other constant here is pianist Don Pullen, an important collaborator on quite of few of Hanrahan's albums.

Recorded live at the Victoriaville Festival in Canada about six weeks before the cold war ended, bassoonist/alto saxophonist Cooper (formerly of Henry Cow and the Feminist Improvisors Group) joined forces with singer/lyricist Sally Potter to present a defiant musical challenge to Europe, the United States, and other politically charged climes. The music here is very similar to that of Henry Cow, but is even more outspoken. Cooper's reed playing works closely in the interior of the ensemble, which also includes Phil Minton (vocals, trumpet), Alfred "23" Harth (tenor sax and clarinet), Elvira Plenar (piano), ex-Soft Machine member Hugh Hopper (electric bass guitar), and Marilyn Mazur (drums). This one-hour unedited performance has many stark, bitter moments and some truly inventive playing. 7-Tease might be considered the opening of what one could call Donovan's years in the wilderness. His next to last album, Cosmic Wheels, had managed to generate sales but its successor, Essence to Essence, marked the tipping point beyond which, because of the seeming datedness of his image, or whatever reason, he was no longer regarded by the public as being terribly important or relevant, or his records programmed by radio stations or ordered by record retailers in quantities resembling his earlier work. All of this is a pity because a fair hearing of 7-Tease reveals an album steeped in disillusionment, yet built upon beautiful melodies and some of the most diverse and appealing sounds and arrangements of his career, and a harder rocking sound than he was usually known for (courtesy of Nashville-based producer Norbert Putnam, who'd done something similar for Joan Baez).
