Over the course of three discs, AFTER MIDNIGHT presents a 1980 Jerry Garcia Band concert in its entirety. During this period, the Grateful Dead were being revitalized, with a new keyboardist (Brent Mydland) and a new album (GO TO HEAVEN), but Garcia still found time to steal away with longtime bassist John Kahn, keyboardist Ozzie Ahlers, and drummer Johnny De Foncesca for some extracurricular activities. It's easy to see why this particular performance was singled out for release. Given Garcia's penchant for a laid-back (though brilliant) performance style, it's almost shocking to hear the forcefulness and soulful emotive qualities he brings to bear on the Motown staple "How Sweet It Is to Be Loved by You" and the J.J. Cale classic "After Midnight," where his fiery guitar work is undeniably electrifying. Also interesting is the interplay with Ahlers, who took advantage of burgeoning synthesizer technology, incorporating extensive synth soloing into the proceedings and providing a fascinating foil for Garcia's liquid lead lines. Deadheads will also be delighted by the presence of Dead lyricist Robert Hunter on "Tiger Rose" and "Promontory Rider," two songs from his own solo repertoire.

excellent collection addition I've been a huge fan of the Grateful Dead for years and have also become quite fond of Jerry's diversions. This is a must have.

Jerry is his Prime This 3 CD Set is close to perfection. Not only is the sound quality as good as it can possible get for a live recording that is 24 years old, but Garcia's voice and guitar playing is prime perfect. Songs like; I'll Take A Melody and Mission in the Rain, you can feel the soulful passion of his voice, Jerry does not just "play" music, he "is" the music. This CD offers the listener a inside look of a musician with extreme dedication to his craft. The main treat of course is the After Midnight Jam. Jerry was a improvising master and you can hear him think with his guitar as he rolls into uncharted territory and offers new horizons of sound and expression.
Also a unsung hero of the Bass guitar is John Kahn. Check out his amazing sound during, That's What Love Will Make You Do, He simply smokes the song into a deep groove that puts the sound into another viewpoint of top notch musicianship. Get this CD if you are into Great Songs and passion from a soulful master, The amzing Jerry Garcia. Submitted by Wayne (Edmonstom MD) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

After Midnight: Kean College, 2/28/80 CD music
$18.29 At a time when the British Invasion was taking over the charts in America and the first flashes of psychedelia were appearing on the horizon of rock music, Johnny Rivers was a guy who had no problem carrying the flag for simple, meat-and-potatoes rock & roll. He was also good enough at it that he didn't sound reactionary, but like someone who loved the classic styles of rock and R&B and gave them the respect they deserved, not unlike John Fogerty and Creedence Clearwater Revival a few years down the road (though Rivers didn't have the songwriting knack that was Fogerty's strongest asset). Rivers cut several strong live albums at his favorite stomping grounds, the Whisky a Go-Go in Los Angeles, and this two-fer CD from Beat Goes On records pairs up two of the later LPs in the series, 1966's And I Know You Wanna Dance and 1967's Whisky a Go-Go Revisited. Both albums ...
