A happening. Not that these two heavyweight reedsmen had never shared a stage, but this was going to be a face-off, a clash between two of the hardest-working free improv trios on the circuit. On the left side of the stage: Evan Parker, with drummer Paul Lytton and pianist Alex von Schlippenbach, the latter filling in for bassist Barry Guy. On the right side: Peter Brötzmann and his trusty rhythm section, bassist William Parker and drummer Hamid Drake. These are two highly experienced and gifted trios, with different approaches (complementary ones, some will say). And what happened on-stage, as The Bishop's Move testifies, was a magical 75 minutes of relentless improvising, with a constant shift between open-ended sharing and thrust-and-parry dynamics. The single continuous piece begins with all six musicians on stage. Right out of the gate, the players hit an energy peak, eager to demonstrate that this meeting will not be for the weak. Things do quiet down afterwards, especially as players start walking off and coming back, sifting through a number of subgroupings, including the original two trios and a piano-plus-double-percussion segment. Parker displays his unmatched technique early on, while Brötzmann waits until 50 minutes in before taking the stage by storm and literally stealing the show, first with an inspired clarinet solo over Parker's bass and Drake's frantic djembe, then with a devastating sax segment as Drake moves back to the drumkit. Most supergroups don't live up to expectations, but this one delivers all the promises contained within its name. Compared to the laid-back performances found on the recent Parker/Schlippenbach/Lytton two-CD set released on Psi (America 2003, recorded during the same tour), The Bishop's Move is surprisingly high-energy. What exactly is the Box Track?Would a stripper really sit on a woofer? Just two of the questions answered by Thaddeus James in the second release from Notebook Noise. The 2009 Debonair Wit project has been put together over 49 NN sessions, taking 4-6 hours almost every week, throughout the last year; adding up to 14 new tracks and a slew of steady buzz: one of URB magazine’s Next 1000, Michelle Centeno says “An earful of melodies, Notebook Noise is a concoction of jazz, funk, and hip hop… " while the classic ‘Chronic Snooper’ drew the following praise "There really isn't much I could suggest musically that could help this be any stronger than it already is." - Graig Streaman, Manager, A&R for TAXI. With new videos popping up all over the internet and new gigs racking up in the calendar, NN seems to have the world turning to take a good look and listen; from Chicago, all the way across the water to a new found following in the UK. DJ's are starting to spin NN, and with new remixes and club tracks on the EP the concrete is setting for the foundations of a great new Midwest hip-hop band. The Notebook Noise core members: John Gray aka Johnasaurus Rex; and Thaddeus James aka Jeff Mroz, got real organic on the Debonair Wit EP. Production was hands-on and as fast as lightening with John seeming to be in some other world to bring the songs to life. The basic idea would be thought of for about a minute, and then within a half hour the songs would be living, breathing, soul-seeking monsters; complete with bass-lines and synth breaks. It seemed that there was left over energy from Snares, Hooks and Rhyme Books (08 Mother Brain) still hovering in that smoky basement studio. Frank Clayton aka FCP had a heavy musical effect on all the previous projects, but with a new distance between his Chicago apartment and the studio it looked at one time that he wouldn’t make it onto the album. No fear - a FCP vs. NN remix has made its way to the track listing. What starts the EP may, in fact, be the oddest addition of folklore and legend for the NN crew, as it’s based on The Simpsons. ‘Nuclear Dro’ and’ Super Nintendo Chalmers (Nuclear Dro-ish)’ are the alpha and omega of a seven track mini-album based on a drug caper involving characters from ...
