Owing as much to Raymond Scott, cartoon music, and BBC stereophonic test labs as they do labelmates Kid 606 and Blectum from Blechdom, End have released a disc of frenzied exotic lounge music modernized for the laptop jet set. Edits abound as samples skitter and clamor about, layered among impressive percussion workouts. And just when the music and themes have been set, End and company move right on to the next idea with great expediency. It's quirky without being cheeky, and at nearly half an hour runs at just the right length without turning cumbersome. Similar to most Tigerbeat6 releases, it is adventurous yet somewhat challenging listening that will reward the ears of experimental techno and bizarro electro fans. ~ Rob Theakston
Personnel: Mark Rosengarden, Janet Green, Mindy Klink, Susan Byrne (drums).

Percussions music CDs
$13.58 Devin Townsend's maniacal/wacky tendencies duel with his instinct for skull-crushing heaviness on ADDICTED, the second in a planned trilogy of albums he's put together since retiring his ultimate metal band, Strapping Young Lad, a few years back. Anneke van Giersbergen, formerly of the Gathering, is Townsend's vocal partner throughout much of the album, creating a Lacuna Coil-esque effect as he roars and she croons and the guitar riffs ride almost disco- and techno-like rhythms. "Bend It Like Bender" is a particularly weird blend of metal and Hi-NRG, something Rammstein might come up with after a weekend ...
| | Anthrax Among The Living CDs (1987) With DVD; Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Percussions songs
$24.25 When Anthrax released AMONG THE LIVING in 1987, the band was a part of a then-burgeoning heavy metal sub-genre called speed or thrash metal. This was an inversion of glam metal. The band members wore worn-out jeans and T-shirts, their long hair was hairspray-free, and not a smudge of make-up was applied to their unsightly mugs. Their music was dense, borrowing speed from punk and hardcore and mammoth guitar riffing from metal, and featured ...

$6.19 Dokken wasted no time in issuing a follow-up to its breakthrough 1984 release, TOOTH AND NAIL. Although the band had been on tour constantly since the debut's release, Dokken went directly back into the studio, issuing UNDER LOCK AND KEY one year later. The new album bore stylistic similarities to its ...

| | R L Burnside Wish I Was In Heaven Sitting Down CDs (2000)
Percussions songs
$10.95 Legendary bluesman turned unlikely indie-rock hero R.L. Burnside returns with a set that splits the difference between the Beck-derived post-modernisms of his previous COME ON IN and more traditional Delta stylings. Fortunately, Burnside is such a strong artist that he sounds equally at home with either approach.
The honkytonk-ish "My Eyes Keep Me in Trouble," for example, pairs mandolin with sampled drums. Blues purists will no doubt prefer the title track, an ancient-sounding near-field holler performed by Burnside and his adopted son Kenny Brown on acoustic guitar. Others will appreciate such highlights as the magnificently spooky version of Skip James' "Hard Time Killing Floor;" an astonishing guitar-driven re-imagining of Don Covay's "Chain of Fools;" and "Nothing Man," which chugs along on a great swampy groove like vintage Slim Harpo.

| | Bartley Gardens & Armies CD (2003)
Percussions songs
$11.39 Bartley's much anticipated label debut, "Gardens & Armies" has been met with enthusiastic audiences and rave reviews. "Accomplished!" proclaims WXRT Chicago radio host Marty Lennartz. With a knack for intelligent lyrics, angelic vocals, seductive melody, and hooky guitar, Bartley creates a rock mixture that immediately resonates. In "Gardens & Armies" he produces an album of expression and raw emotion which both exalts in the hopeful spirit of life's finer moments and reflects in the melancholy of their aftermath. Crafted with stunning arrangements and powerful prose, Bartley's writing and production is confirmation that a craftsman knows his own art and what it should contain. Though officially a solo project, Bartley credits drummer Devin Staples with bringing his songs to life. In a moment that would foreshadow ...
