A wisecracking con man who owns a guard dog agency accidentally makes an opera singer the target of hit men. Stars Jack Nicholson, Ellen Barkin, Beverly D'Angelo. Harry Bliss is a wise-cracking con man and owner of the House of Bliss Guard Dog Agency. A sexy, single female hires him for protection, but when they get together, it's nothing but trouble.
MAN TROUBLE, the fifth collaboration between Jack Nicholson and director Bob Rafelson, is a comical thriller. Nicholson plays Harry Bliss, who runs a guard dog service and is going through counseling with his wife, Adele (Lauren Tom). A serial killer is on the loose in Los Angeles, and when the apartment of classical singer Joan Spruance (Ellen Barkin) is ransacked and she starts receiving threatening phone messages, Joan moves into the Hollywood Hills home of her sister, Andy (Beverly D'Angelo). However, Joan doesn't feel safe there either, because she's harassed by Andy's ex-lovers. So Joan hires a guard dog from Harry's company, and soon Harry is providing more than protection for the beautiful singer.
Harry is a natural-born liar who, because of his profession, feels that he lives by a code of honor--even if he can't quite explain it--and Nicholson plays him with comic exasperation, as one thing after another spins out of his control. The usually tough-looking Ellen Barkin is soft and vulnerable, as she is badgered by her conductor husband, harassed by unknown callers, menaced by men from her sister's past, and "helped" by Harry. Harry Dean Stanton and Saul Rubinek provide fine support.
Theaterical release: July 17, 1992.
Shot on location in Los Angeles, California.
MAN TROUBLE is the fifth movie on which director Bob Rafelson and Jack Nicholson have collaborated. Nicholson did not appear in Rafelson's HEAD, but co-produced and co-wrote the Monkees vehicle. He went on to star in Rafelson's FIVE EASY PIECES, THE KING OF MARVIN GARDENS, and THE POSTMAN ALWAYS RINGS TWICE.
For MAN TROUBLE, Rafelson and Nicholson reunited with producer-scriptwriter Carole Eastman who, under the name Adrien Joyce, wrote the script and co-wrote the story for FIVE EASY PIECES. In 1967, also as Adrien Joyce, she wrote Monte Hellman's THE SHOOTING, which starred Jack Nicholson. Eastman was reportedly so unhappy with what Rafelson did to her script for MAN TROUBLE that she disowned the film and pledged never to work with Rafelson again.
Meryl Streep was initially intended for the role of Joan Spruance in MAN TROUBLE. She withdrew when she became pregnant, and was replaced by Ellen Barkin.
The music for MAN TROUBLE was written by the great French composer Georges Delerue.
Estimated budget $29 million.

To comfort Louis, Lestat creates another vampire (Kirsten Dunst in a star-making peformance), a young girl who from then on cannot age. | | Star! DVD (1968)
Man Trouble movie DVD
$7.09 A musical biography of British music hall and Broadway star Gertrude Lawrence, STAR! is a convincing and entertaining film, featuring an impressive score. The immensely talented Julie Andrews plays Lawrence, a beautiful, headstrong, and fiercely independent woman who will do anything for her career (including leaving her daughter and husband). Her early adventures in the music hall chorus and her later involvement in British high society are chronicled in this lush film that, though it received several Academy Award nominations, was not appreciated by the public until some 30 years after its original showing, when it was rereleased. One of the most interesting, heartwarming, and perhaps most famous aspects ...
| | Saturday Night Live: Best Of Chris Kattan DVD (2004)
Man Trouble video
$7.09 Chris Kattan has followed in the footsteps of many SNL comedians before him who used the show as a stepping stone to Hollywood; his success of late as a filmic funnyman has seen him in such projects as MONKEYBONE, CORKY ROMANO, UNDERCOVER BROTHER, and even the thriller HOUSE ON HAUNTED HILL. But his tenure on Saturday Night Live still stands as some of his best work, and showcases the range and uproarious hilarity of his talent. A riotous Butabi Brothers skit, ...
| | Nothing Sacred / Made For Each Other DVD (2004)
Man Trouble film
$3.49 This double-feature of comedy and drama classics includes the following:
NOTHING SACRED: In this classic screwball comedy, Carole Lombard plays Hazel Flagg, a small-town girl who pretends to be dying from radium poisoning so she can win a free trip to New York City. Fredric March plays Wally Cook, the big-city newspaper reporter who sets up the plan by breaking the story and then complicates matters when he falls for Hazel. The result is a marvelous satire, directed by William Wellman and featuring terrific performances from the two leads as well as Charles Winninger and Walter Connolly. Carole Lombard offers up an ironic monologue about the beauty of dying in what was to be one of her last films prior to her real-life ending in a plane crash.
MADE FOR EACH OTHER: Jimmy Stewart and Carole Lombard star as newlyweds in this delightful romantic dramedy. Stewart plays Johnny Mason, an amiable New York City lawyer who has put his career in jeopardy by refusing the hand of his employer's daughter. His beloved wife, Jane (comically portrayed by Lombard), is despised by Johnny's ...

| | Who The Hell Is Juliette? DVD (1997)
Man Trouble DVD
$21.49 A absolutely stunning documentary from Mexico, WHO THE HELL IS JULIETTE interweaves the story of Juliette, a 16 year-old Mexican prostitute with that of the Mexican model Fabiola Quiroz. The two could be twins, and their family lives are similarly anarchic; Juliette never knew her father, and Fabiola's mother can't quite recall who her father is. Curiously, the two were brought together during a music video shoot (by this film's director), and have been friends since. Decidedly nonlinear, the film throws together a number of disparate elements such as clips from soap operas, fashion shows, ...
