Six years after his big breakthrough album, Aquel Que Había Muerto, and a whopping 13 after his debut album, Vico C was an anomaly in the reggaeton and Latin rap world: a veteran. In an industry where even the biggest names and heavy charters have a scant three or four records to their credit, any artist like Vico C with 15 is one of two things, a relic or a legend. One listen to his 2004 release Desahogo with quickly prove one thing, he's no relic. The production, though stylistically current, is head and shoulders above any contemporaries for sophistication and invention. One of the great downfalls of the reggaeton genre is its tendency toward repetition, probably due to its youth. Vico C has variety and depth to spare. Super-clean, sharp reggaeton programming meets the East Coast dirt-sample on several tracks. This is much to the delight of Latino hip-hop fans who have grown tired of the kiddie-pool-deep production that currently rules the market. With hooks that show ingenuity and arrangements to match, Desahogo earned its 2004 Latin Grammy nomination. ~ Evan C. For anyone hurting for more super-aggressive reggaeton, with straight-down-the-center beats and MCs that sound as though they're about 30 seconds from a fist fight, Eliel has a disc of better than 20 tracks that will fit the bill. Having served as a beat-maker for some of reggaeton's best-known artists, Eliel stands beside Noriega and Luny Tunes as one of the most in-demand producers on the scene. $12.79 If the Go-Go's went for a more underground edge, they'd find a song like "In the Dark" from the group Citizens Here and Abroad to be their "Stairway to Heaven." Oozing with '60s vocal harmonies and nearly cosmic guitars, it all swims in a very catchy mix of new pop. There's so much to this 11-song disc that one needs multiple sittings to grasp the intense and pretty melodies that are drifting -- and sometimes plowing -- through the elegant and very tight playing. The packaging is stunning, featuring colorful artwork on the cover and dozens of small (less than one-inch) photos inside the CD cover. It reflects the music inside with precision missing in many an ...
| | Old Town School Of Folk Music: Songbook Volume Two & Three CDs (2007)
Desahogo
$12.25 OLD TOWN SCHOOL OF FOLK MUSIC SONG BOOK: VOL 2 & 3 continues the celebration of 50 years of the venerable Old Town School of Folk Music in Chicago. The famed institution has had many lives: first as one of the first programs to codify and teach American folk music; second, as the proud alma mater of many '60s and '70s luminaries such as Roger McGuinn, Steve Goodman, and John Prine; and finally, in the '90s and '00s, as a refuge for like-minded folk aficionados who wanted to breathe life into their beloved music. The SONG BOOK series speaks to the last chapter of the school's existence and sounds less like an academic exercise and more like a group of musicians' collective love poem to the traditions that inspired them. Highlights include Michael Schenkelberg's plaintive version of the chestnut "Lonesome Road," James Hand's countrified "Corrina, Corrina," and Kelly Hogan and Scott Login's gentle version of Ian and Sylvia's "Last Thing on My Mind." The set also foregrounds a few famous offspring: Amy Nelson (Willie's daughter) and Cathy Guthrie (Arlo's daughter) harmonize exquisitely on "Wildwood Flower," and the criminally underrated Amy Allison (Mose's daughter) simply owns "Shenandoah." The package features extensive liner notes about the material and the Old Town School itself. After issuing the first disc in its four-part "songbook" series in 2006, Chicago's Old Town School of Folk Music packages the second and third volumes together on this double-CD set, with a final single album to follow. The idea is to have established folk standards, most of them credited to "Traditional" as songwriter, performed by a variety of contemporary artists in their own styles. The scholarly liner notes by Paul Tyler heavily reference song collectors like Francis James Child, John A. Lomax, and Chicago's own Carl Sandburg, explaining the origins and variations of the selections. But the performers have been left to create their own interpretations, sometimes with surprising results. For example, Tyler's citation of the various '20s recordings of "Don't You Hear Jerusalem Moan" doesn't ...
