FWX is a milestone for Fates Warning, marking 20 years since the band's debut, NIGHT ON BROCKEN. The album signals the end of one era, as departing drummer Mark Zonder's last with the group, and the beginning of another, as Fates make their first foray into producing their own records. While often compared to their prog-metal peers, Fates Warning are far less technical in their approach. What makes them progressive, and consistently sets them apart, is the lush mood and atmosphere they create. On FWX, their 10th studio album, the emotional tapestry of the group's songwriting carries a subtext of melancholy, personal reflection.
"Left Here" is close kin to the band's early-to-mid 1990s sound, while much of FWX ("Simple Human" and "Wish," especially) carries the aggressive touch established on DISCONNECTED (2000) and A PLEASANT SHADE OF GRAY (1998). "River Wide Ocean Deep" matches singer Ray Alder at his brooding best with a sampled vocal loop, yielding a haunting East Indian vibe. One of FWX's highlights, "Another Perfect Day," exhibits inspiring creative might and sums up the essence of the band's sound more effectively than ever before.

....because it's progressive metal. i have a fates warning album from 1991, and they are slow, but at least the riffs are razor-edged. if you don't like them, go listen to girly stuff like no doubt or destiny's child or vanessa carlton.

This is Fates Warning 10th album i have every one. Simply Masterfull.
Make sure you at least listen to a clip for yourself. As far away from the Top 40 garbage as you can go. Is is an 11 :)

Fates Warning,are back on the right track. This record Methoes uses some of the same methods and riffing styles he so succesfully employed on the O.S.I. record. I think the O.S.I. collaboration was a good inspiration for this new Fates offering. Fwx is more dynamic than the last two Fates records, which I also happen to like. Ray sounds great too. Overall excellent record.

Lamb of God 's New American Gospel debut featured a caustic yet lucid version of post-Pantera death metal, surprisingly effective songwriting, massive amounts of confidence for a brand new band, and, to be honest, a really annoying drum sound (rather like tightly skinned tin cans). For nearly two decades, not much was heard from one of the '80s top mainstream rock acts, Survivor. In the wake of 1988's Too Hot to Sleep, it seemed as if the band had fallen off the face of the earth. But with renewed interest in '80s rock circa the early 21st century, three Survivor veterans -- singer Jimi Jamison (not the "Eye of the Tiger" guy, he's the "Burning Heart" guy), guitarist Frankie Sullivan, and drummer Marc Droubay -- opted to resuscitate the band, with 2006's Reach. Unlike some other acts of the '80s who attempt to keep pace with the young pups by updating their sound (and oft-times floundering), Reach finds Survivor sticking with what they know best.
