International Connection album
$15.65 Celtic Woman, initially a one-shot collaboration by six leading Irish vocalists for a 2004 PBS special, struck a chord of adoration for the Emerald Isle, a fancy affecting both sides of the Atlantic, and swiftly became a permanent collective. THE GREATEST JOURNEY captures many of the best moments of elegant harmonizing by the act, from their serene and rapturous take on Enya's "Orinoco Flow" to the mournful yet poppily uplifting indigenous folk of "You Raise Me Up."
Import pressing includes two bonus tracks, Mo Ghile Mear (Live From Slane Castle) and Spanish Lady (Live ...

International Connection CD music
$11.99 On the evidence of this, the band's first record, Dead Can Dance can clearly be seen as a "Goth" group in the vein of Bauhaus, et al. The band's sound here is much more clearly based in the "contemporary"--Dead Can Dance uses traditional song structures, the group's instrumentation is almost entirely synthesized, and co-vocalist Lisa Gerrard's voice rarely gets into the ...
| | Victor Jara Antologia Musical CD (2003) Remastered; Remastered Edition
International Connection music CDs
$20.95 ANTOLOGIA MUSICAL collects the best-loved tracks from legendary Chilean folk artist and political prisoner Victor Jara, on two CDs.
Chilean singer Victor Jara's tragic death in 1973 (following the overthrow of Salvador Allende's government) robbed the world of one its most humane voices. A leading light in South America's nueva cancion movement, Jara wrote passionately and courageously about the rights of the downtrodden, but he also composed wonderful love songs as well as a handful of songs that displayed his wry sense of humor. This 45-track, two-disc collection was drawn largely from vinyl and cassette sources, since the master reels of most of Jara's work have long since been either lost or destroyed. The sound here is decent, though, with only the occasional pop or click, and now and then a little noticeable tape hiss, but in a way it all adds to the intimacy and importance of these ...

| | Vanessa Da Mata Sim CD (2007)
International Connection album
$11.29 Sim is Vanessa da Mata's third album and the first after the huge commercial success of Essa Boneca Tem Manual, from 2004. If Essa Boneca Tem Manual was a blatant, although undeniably very successful, appeal to pure commercialism and the radio hit lists, Sim is a firm step back towards a more intellectual approach to Brazilian pop music. Liminha, who produced the last album, has been substituted by the hip and hyped production duo Kassin and Mario Caldato. As usual when Kassin is involved, the result is an excellent and very fresh sounding production which manages to give a very modern impression without appearing fake or overproduced. Sim was partly recorded in Jamaica, and reggae is indeed one of the primary themes of the album. "Vermelho," "Ilegais," and "Absurdo" are all pure reggae songs. And as a bonus, Sly & Robbie, one of Jamaica's most acclaimed and prolific producer teams, contribute on five tracks. A less welcome guest appearance is that of Ben Harper, who lends his voice and English lyrics to "Boa Sorte/Good Luck." The purpose of Harper's presence is ...

| | Sisqo Unleash The Dragon CD (1999)
International Connection music CDs
$12.59 UNLEASH THE DRAGON was nominated for the 2001 Grammy Award for Best R&B Album, Sisqo was nominated for Best New Artist and "Thong Song" was nominated for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance and for Best R&B Song.
Since 1995, whenever he hasn't been guesting on tracks by artists like Mya, Sisqo has been cutting his teeth with Baltimore's gritty soulsters Dru Hill. On UNLEASH THE DRAGON, he unfurls his soulful, sultry, and sensual voice in the solo arena. While the backbeats are of the Teddy Riley stop-start variety, his baritone vocals are like those of Luther, with just a touch of a Teddy growl. While the lyrics don't cover any new ground, do soul torch-songers really need to explore new topics? Love, after all, is eternal.
Sisqo is aided in his coming out by a requisite cast of rappers. He chose the perfect reggae-drenched toasters for UNLEASH THE DRAGON in Beanie Sigel on the title track and in the underappreciated Ja Rule on the remix of "You Are Everything." The latter is one of the more alluring male siren songs, the best urban hang joint this side of Maxwell's best efforts; that is, of course, unless you also consider "Your Love Is Incredible" or "Incomplete." Okay, so Sisqo doesn't stray far from the Dru Hill formula, but it's an appealing formula that makes for an auspicious debut.
