| Sings About You/Sentimental & Melancholy Music Review Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) EMI begins to fill a vacuum Joe Williams' ballad albums for Roulette are among the last and most neglected treasures of the Golden Age of the American Song. Now in this British EMI twofer, "Sings About You!" and "Sentimental & Melancholy," an intolerable void begins to be filled. While Joe's best-known Roulette tourch-song album, "A Man Ain't Supposed to Cry," has been intermittently available, Joe's companion classics have never, to my knowledge, been released on CD. But finally they're back. As always, repertoire is superb and Jimmy Jones' arrangements are tasteful, By the way, Ben Webster is a frequent guest on "Sings About You!"—a bonus reason, if one is needed, to purchase this very welcome album. | | Glen Campbell Sings The Best Of Jimmy Webb 1967-1982 CD (2006) (Import) Australia
Sings About You/Sentimental & Melancholy
$19.99 For a few years in the late 1960s and early '70s, the names Glen Campbell and Jimmy Webb were almost synonymous with high-quality pop hits. This best-of gathers Campbell's definitive versions of Webb's "By the Time I Get to Phoenix," "Wichita Lineman," and "Galveston," as well as the sentimental breakup song "Honey Come Back" and the less well-known, enigmatic "Where's the Playground Suzie?" An extensive variety of later recordings, like the '80s ballad "Still Within the Sound of My Voice," demonstrate that Campbell was as definitive an interpreter of Webb's material as Dionne Warwick was of Burt Bacharach and Hal David's. On paper, Glen Campbell and Jimmy Webb wouldn't have seemed to be an especially good match as collaborators when Campbell started cutting Webb's tunes in 1968 -- Campbell was a gifted guitar picker with a solid rep as a studio musician but not much of a pedigree as a singer or frontman, while Webb was just making the leap from writing fluffy pop for the 5th Dimension to the more mature material that would make him one of the most celebrated songwriters of his generation. However, once Campbell cut Webb's "By the Time I Get to Phoenix," it was obvious that they were an inspired combination; Campbell's vocals were rich without being histrionic, pinpointing the emotions in Webb's lyrics and bringing them forward with subtle strength, and Webb's melodies seemed perfectly suited for the ebb and flow of Campbell's gentle Southern tenor. Together, Campbell and Webb crafted some of the finest and most emotionally insightful commercial pop music of the 1960s -- "Wichita Lineman," "Galveston," "Where's the Playground Susie?," "Just Another Piece of Paper" -- and while not all their later collaborations lived up to the standards of these early triumphs, this collection of 24 songs written by Webb and recorded by Campbell over the course of 25 years is an object lesson in songcraft as well as the art of the interpretive vocalist. In addition to the early Campbell/Webb ...
