Falling From Grace Reviews: "...[Mellencamp's] vibrantly funny and touching film plays as an extension of his music without his singing a note..."
-- Peter Travers, Rolling Stone "...FALLING FROM GRACE has a folksy, collaborative feeling that works well....Mellencamp's direction, like his performance in the central role, reflects an affecting earnestness..."
-- Janet Maslin, New York Times "...A movie of heart, subtlety, and dramatic zest..."
-- Owen Gleiberman, Entertainment Weekly "...There's a sharp, novelistic sense of observation in the way the characters bounce off each other's time-worn hostilities. The dialogue has an emotional subtext -- an undertow of feeling..."
-- Peter Rainer, Los Angeles Times "...Mellencamp turns out to have a real filmmaking gift. His film is perceptive and subtle....The characters created here with McMurtry are three-dimensional and fully realized..."

Falling From Grace Movie Review Average Rating: (3.5 out of 5 stars) Little Pink Houses Hold Dark Secrets John Mellencamp probably doesn't get the credit he deserves for his musical career and his feature film debut as star and director probably suffered a similar unjust fate. Falling From Grace is an unsparing look at how success cannot redeem a dysfunctional family and Mellencamp not only holds his own alongside veteran actors, but handles the directorial chores as well. Despite the lead man's natural charm, this is not a very happy man/family or story as writer Larry McMurtry spins a tale of southern gothic right up there with Tennessee Williams. As a movie, it would have benefited from a more R rated leash rather than the PG restrictions it works under. And it seems a little incomplete. Might there be a director's cut in John's vault? It would be worth checking out. Submitted by wearytune (Chicago, IL USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 1 of 1 found this helpful.
Home From the Hill---Lite Not a bad movie, especially when you consider Mellencamp did everything but play the female lead in the movie. A lot like real life. I know McMurtrey is too good a writer to steal a story line from a 1959-60 movie Starring Robert Mitchum, George Peppard, and George Hamilton, but you might want to check out "Home From the Hill" and see why I titled this movie review "Home From the Hill---Lite". $13.95 In the mid/late-'80s, the rock scene was hard to decipher. With an over-saturation of new bands either aping Led Zeppelin's boogie woogie metal or glam pop candy, older rock fans were left scratching their heads in bewilderment. Lucky for them, such classic rock bands as Bad Company made strong returns, ...

$16.29 COURAGE UNDER FIRE: Following the 1991 Gulf War, Lieutenant Colonel Nathaniel Serling (Denzel Washington) is assigned to review the background of the late Captain Karen Walden (Meg Ryan), who has been posthumously nominated for a medal of honor. While investigating Walden's candidacy, Serling is forced to face his own disillusionment and guilt surrounding the war. As he begins the interviewing process, he uncovers several inconsistencies in the stories told by the late pilot's crew. The three officers, who may or may not have been saved by the captain's actions, all give drastically different accounts of the events leading up to Walden's death. Ilario (Matt Damon) paints Walden as an unselfish, courageous hero, while the surly Monfriez (Lou Diamond Phillips) describes her as a crybaby and a coward. The third soldier, Altameyer (Seth Gilliam), lies dying in an army hospital, mumbling guilty confessions in a medicated haze. Similar to the storytelling technique used in Akira Kurosawa's RASHOMON, director Edward Zwick's COURAGE UNDER FIRE features each officer's account of the fateful incident reenacted onscreen, offering wildly diverse portrayals of Walden. Meg Ryan shines in a role that demands she play one character a multitude of ways. As Serling pieces together the radically different tales of combat, he uncovers the painful truth and simultaneously ...

$10.15 Fast cars, fast women, sex, drugs, and rock and roll, with guns and ammo thrown in for good measure--that was the world of porn star John Holmes in Los Angeles in the 1970s. Val Kilmer, who previously embodied rock lead singer Jim Morrison in THE DOORS, transforms himself into the famous porn celebrity in this excitingly sordid tale of excess, which is told from the point of view of several different players, echoing Akira Kurosawa's RASHOMON. Under the stage name Johnny Wadd, Holmes was rumored to have had sex ...
