| | Dokken Hell To Pay CD (2004)
Worlds Apart CD music
$8.69 Singer Don Dokken and drummer Mick Brown may be all that's left of the original Dokken, but the group's signature blend of pop and heavy metal has changed little since their late-'80s heyday. The problem is, they were never that interesting to begin with. On Hell to Pay, the role of ex-guitar legend George Lynch is played by ex-Warlock axe slinger John Levin, and the departure of original bass player Jeff Pilson brings ex-Ted Nugent and Yngwie Malmsteen collaborator Barry Sparks into the fold, resulting in a record that's impeccably played but mediocre at best. Levin brings an elegant, almost Middle Eastern sense of melodicism to the promising opener, "Last Goodbye," and an old-school bluesy swagger to "Haunted," and Don Dokken's voice has settled nicely into a smooth lupine growl that complements the tight arrangements, but there's a blandness to the whole affair that envelops the record after "Prozac Nation." Perhaps it's the fact that the obligatory power ballad, "Care for You," which is apparently so powerful that it needs to be played again at the end of the record ...
| | Alan Parsons Valid Path CD (2004)
Worlds Apart music CDs
$14.35 Five years after The Time Machine, Alan Parsons returned to the producer's chair refreshed and ready to go with an arsenal of new songs. The immediate standout is Parsons' highly updated super-polished sound, and to expect less from Parsons would be an insult to his legacy and reputation as one of rock's most respected producers and engineers. As usual for a Parsons ...

| | Billy Branch Live '82 CD (1994)
Worlds Apart songs
$10.69 Billy Branch & The Sons Of The Blues include: Billy Branch, Lurie Bell (vocals, guitar); J.W. Williams (vocals, bass).
The fact that Billy Branch's backing band for this live date from 1982 is called the SOBs gives listeners hope that this will be a nasty, biting concert. For the most part, that's incorrect, since this wasn't a performance that reached a rolling boil -- it was one that kept to a low simmer. Nearly all of the songs are taken at slow tempos, and the band lays back greatly; even when they get a little bit of steam, as on "Eyesight to the Blind," they're relaxed. This isn't a bad thing, and the group -- including not just Branch, but Lurrie Bell, Eli Murray, ...
| | Dr Hook Greatest Hits CD (2001)
Worlds Apart album
$5.45 Sony's budget Super Hits collection includes a scant ten tracks from legendary country-rockers Dr. Hook & the Medicine Show. The majority of the band's Shel Silverstein-penned hits are here ("Cover of the Rolling Stone," "Freakin' at the Freaker's Ball," "Sylvia's Mother," and "If I'd Only Come and Gone"), but fan favorites such as "I Got Stoned and Missed It," "Bunky and Lucille," and "The Ugliest Man in Town" have been omitted, resulting in what ...

| | Kevin Crawford D Flute Album CD (1995)
Worlds Apart songs
$13.45 Crawford's mastery of a notoriously difficult instrument at such a young age is remarkable in and of itself; that he brings his virtuosity to bear on these tunes with such grace and so little unnecessary flashiness is even more so. He plays with the astringent, reedy tone favored by almost all Irish flutists, and his playing is so precise that at times it sounds almost programmed; he tosses off multiple ornaments as if it were as simple as breathing. His performances of old favorites ...
| | Eastmountainsouth CD (2003)
Worlds Apart album
$12.59 Eastmountainsouth's debut album is a simple effort, but just because it's simple doesn't mean it lacks substance. Kat Maslich and Peter Adams have crafted a sweet set of songs for a springlike blend of classic folk and country. They carefully work with the basics when it comes to presentation; however, Maslich and Adams' talent lies in songwriting. Maslich and Adams pull from cherished literature, American culture, and family moments to compose their songbook. Each song arrives on its own thanks to the album's organic and earthy tones, while waves of passion are heavy without attack. Themes of love and heartbreak resonate throughout without being assuming, and if an artist is able to pull that off some 50 years after the dawn of rock & roll, it's pretty impressive. Eastmountainsouth does it and does it well. Stephen Foster's staple "Hard Times" is reworked for a bittersweet occasion, while banjos possess a darker mood on "Winter" and "The Ballad of Young Alban and Amandy." Breathy acoustic riffs carry the album as a whole, but Maslich and Adams also experiment with drum machines and electronics. "So You Are to Me" and "Rain Come Down" have lamb-like melodies and are much more full with Eastmountainsouth's informal work behind the sound board. One can only imagine that the country-rock duo will continue to work without conventional expectations for its second album. In the meantime, Eastmountainsouth is a great introduction to the band and solid enough to last until then. ~ MacKenzie Wilson
Additional personnel includes: Bernie Locker (acoustic guitar); Greg Leisz (electric guitar, high-string electric guitar, tenor guitar, pedal steel, mandolin, mandola); Val McCallum (electric guitar, bouzouki); Shane Fontayne ...
