Caught in the fire of a gangland vendetta against his best friend, a blind Vietnam vet and his buddy's son go on a cross-country trek while being pursued by a barbaric band of homicidal thugs. With the calm of a Zen master, the dead-on blind warrior slices his way out of a succession of funny predicaments with his hidden samurai sword.

BLIND FURY is based on the series of Japanese movies made during the 1960s that featured Zatoichi, a wandering blind swordfighter. Updated and Americanized by scriptwriter Charles Robert Carner and director Phillip Noyce, Zatoichi is now Nick Parker (Rutger Hauer), a soldier blinded in action in the Vietnam War and nursed back to health by Vietnamese villagers. Nick develops an acute sense of hearing and, in spite of his disability, becomes a master swordsman--all during the opening credits. BLIND FURY retains the mixture of humor, violence, and sentiment that characterized the original films. Left in charge of young Billy Devereaux (Brandon Call) after the death of his mother, Nick takes Billy across the United States by bus. However, the pair is menaced by overwhelming numbers of vicious thugs led by Slag (Randall "Tex" Cobb, who plays the bounty hunter in the Coen brothers' RAISING ARIZONA) on the journey. Nick, of course, handles these predicaments with casual skill, luck, good humor, and his trusty hidden samurai sword.

BLIND FURY is based on the popular Japanese samurai series from the 1960s, featuring Zatoichi, the blind warrior. In these films, Zatoichi was played by Shintaru Katsu. The film is the American feature debut for Australian director Phillip Noyce. Estimated budget: $7-10 million.

3 stars MORE FUNNY THAN SERIOUS!!!
Blind Fury with Rutger Hauer has it`s amusing moments, but the film becomes more a parody than a serious actionfilm.....Still, I haven`t seen Rutger Hauer doing a bad part in any film, even if the film stinks :) 3 stars from me!

5 stars Excellent movie
This was the best movie by far for Rutger Hauer; what was failed to be mentioned was that it also debuted another martial arts master in his own right: SHO KOSUGI. He alone added spice to the next to last confrontation with Hauer before he went at it with Cobb's character. Being a Ninjutsu expert, Kosugi spiced things up nicely with his swordplay. An excellent movie all around & a spectacular tribute to the "Zatoichi" character.

This is an old movie, but its a really good one. Its about a blind man that can use a sword & its his walking stick. Hello... He looses his sight in a war & learns to use his other senses.

Acclaimed actor Liev Schrieber (DAYTRIPPERS, THE MANCHURIAN CANDIDATE) makes his directorial debut in this adaptation of Jonathan Safran Foer's bestselling novel about a young Jewish-American writer of the same name. Mixing equal parts black comedy and poignant drama, the film follows Jonathan (Elijah Wood) as he travels to the Ukraine to solve a family secret. There he meets his barely legitimate tour guides: Alex (Eugene Hutz, member of the folk-punk band Gogol Bordello), a cosmopolitan playboy obsessed with Michael Jackson and other American icons; Alex's grandfather (Boris Leskin), a man worn down by life who seems to be losing his grip on reality; and Sammy Davis, Jr. Jr, the "seeing-eye bitch" dog who comes along for the ride. As Jonathan closes in on his goal--to find the story behind the woman who saved his grandfather during the Holocaust--it becomes clear that Alex's grandfather has a dark secret of his own that needs to be, as the film suggests, illuminated. EVERYTHING IS ILLUMINATED lives up to the quirkiness of its source material, and is similar to films like BEING JOHN MALKOVICH or LOST IN TRANSLATION. Filmed on location in Prague, the film features breathtaking landscapes, including a memorable scene in a field of sunflowers. Also notable is the film's soundtrack, which features songs by Gogol Bordello, as well as an outstanding ethnic score by Paul Cantelon. Quirky, funny, sweet, and ...
