| | Super Hits 1967: The Summer Of Love CD
The summer of 1967 was a watershed year for pop music (it was the summer of the Beatles' Sgt. Pepper's, after all) that saw old-style love songs like Gary Lewis & the Playboys' "Save Your Heart for Me" bump up against mysterious fare like Procol Harum's "A Whiter Shade of Pale" and hard-hitting Southern soul blasts like Sam & Dave's "Hold On, I'm Coming" on the pop charts. The music on AM radio was never more diverse. This sampler from King Records certainly shows that diversity, but its brevity (it is a little over 25 minutes long) works against it somewhat, as does the fact that none of the songs compiled here is presented in its original version, having been re-recorded in new stereo versions. ~ Steve Leggett

The mono single version of "Hold On, I'm Coming," for instance, was designed to explode out of the small car radio speakers of the day like a detonated soul bomb, and the effect is muted and lost in the stereo rendition included here. The song simply doesn't hit as hard. This is essentially revisionist marketing by King, and this disc is really more of a facsimile of the music of the summer of 1967 than an actual example of it. ~ Steve Leggett

Super Hits 1967: The Summer Of Love
$11.17 Daisy in her hair aside, Carrie Underwood looks flat-out glamorous on the cover of PLAY ON, which is a pretty fair indication of what awaits listeners on her third album. Carrie is still nominally a country artist and sometimes will sing supported by fiddles and steel guitar, but this is ...

Super Hits 1967: The Summer Of Love
$8.69 After two Blue Note LPs recorded in Europe (his adopted home since 1962), Gordon finally made it back to the States to record this mid-Sixties release. Curiously, the two previously unreleased tunes seem slightly out of place with the rest of the record, and feel more akin to the kind of work Gordon's labelmates were releasing at the time. "Flick of a Trick" is a sultry, walking eight-bar blues, while "Very Saxily Yours," distinguishes itself from the standards here by virtue of its riffing melody and use of hits during the head.
