On his debut album, AMERICAN IDOL's second-season winner Ruben Studdard, like runner-up Clay Aiken, surprised some listeners by delivering a disc that presented much less teeny-bopper pop than might be expected, considering the TV show's audience. While Aiken developed a Barry Manilow-esque modern-pop/Broadway hybrid, Studdard dove deep into R&B, unveiling a surprisingly mature effort loaded with urban street credibility.
With 2004's I NEED AN ANGEL, the "Velvet Teddy Bear" once again proves that he is his own man, by recording a full album of contemporary gospel featuring songs by heavy-hitters Fred Hammond, Bill Gaither, and Walter Hawkins, along with the R. Kelly-penned title track. Though often compared to Luther Vandross, here Studdard does his best Al Green, with the smooth, nimble, bass-laden "Goin' Up Yonder" sounding like a combination of Reverend Green and WHAT'S GOING ON-era Marvin Gaye. "Fix It, Jesus," on the other hand, is pure old-school revival meeting, with a foot-stomping beat sure to raise the rafters and engage the spirit. A work that's both uplifting and highly accessible, I NEED AN ANGEL is a clear indication of Studdard's continued artistic growth.

Ruben Studdard I Need An Angel Songs I Need An Angel Music Review Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) Superb I am over the age of 50 and usually apprehensive regarding young (as in age)artist but this young man has an old soul within. I have worn out this CD listening to it most mornings on my drive to work. Excellent vocals by Mr. Studdard. He definitely owns it and I recommend it. It will be worth the purchase. I promise. I also have his other CD Soulful and the name says it all. He reminds me of a young (as in first starting out)Luther Vandross. Submitted by deborahldixon3 (Detroit, MI, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Platinum This album is a true testament to the artist's vocals. Some describe it as inspirational; others as gospel. For me, it's both. Uplifting with something for everyone. Ruben has outdone himself on this. After the title song, my fav is "Ain't No Need to Worry". Everyone who wants to feel good should pick up this CD. There are no bad songs on it. Great production value! I was very pleasantly surprised by the fit and finish of this album from the instrumental production to the vocal arrangements and performances. From wonderful ballads like "i surrender all" which has such a warm mix and gives him a canvas fit for his range. There is almost no hint of pitch correction in the whole album which is very fair to ruben as his natural strength to perform without computerized help should be highlighted and praised. The project director needs great applause for the cohesive placement of each song on the album. This album is audibly everything that the first album was not. Ruben was at home under the headphones in this album as the first one featured many overshot or underreached keys and tones which was a strain on a trained ear but here he was as accurate as anything, just floating weightlessly across the lush background vocals that enveloped "Aint no need to worry". This album needs more of a marketing push by the label regardless of content popularity. The material is simply to great to sit on the shelves. Great Job!! RUBEN IS VERY TRADITIONAL!!!! I believe this is in fact a excellent cd. Ruben has truly went back to his roots and created a great CD. Most of the songs on this cd were performed by gospel legends, but what Mr. Studdard did was added his original flava to make a great song even better. I WOULD RECOMMEND EVERYONE TO PURCHASE THIS CD!!! Submitted by datsakoolnigga04 (Winston Salem, NC) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
