Recorded in Sweden in 2003, this free jazz power trio features three Peters: Brötzmann (saxophone, clarinet, and taragato), Friis Nielsen (electric bass), and Uuskyla (drums). Medicina contains all the excitement, creativity, and deep listening interplay that signifies why the free approach still has plenty to offer. There are eight cuts here, ranging from just over six minutes to over 13. Propulsion is the key here; everything is force, motion, and friction. Hearing Brötzmann play against an electric bass player who understands how to get under blasts of cacophony and keep it all gurgling forward in a snake-like fashion while giving Uuskyla plenty of counterforce. The high point of the session is the final cut, the lengthy "Hard Time Blues," which begins something like a conventional blues with Brötzmann playing a mournful solo before the rest of the band comes in, and swirls about the low end and "melody" for a few bars before beginning to build a tower of tension and energy. The movement of the piece ebbs and flows with a fine solo by Friis Nielsen before Brötzmann takes the blues line and turns it inside out, moving forward and back across three vamps and warping them enough to create a wall of fury. It's a hell of a finish to a very fine album. Medicina is modern free jazz at its best. ~ Thom Jurek

Recorded in 1969, Live in Paris follows two studio albums that the Art Ensemble cut for BYG/Actuel during the same year -- A Jackson in Your House and Message to Our Folks. What Parisian audiences must have made of the band with its wild makeup and costumes can only be debated, but the music contained on this double-CD reissue of the original double album is stellar (the LP was issued on the Arista Freedom label in the United States in 1974 and this set was originally issued by Charly in the United Kingdom in 2002). Each CD features one composition, divided into two parts, in keeping with the LP releases. Most JSP box sets are comprehensive chronological core samples taken from the recording careers of great jazz, blues and country musicians. Some may find JSP's Lightning Special, Vol. 2, subtitled "Volume Two of the Collected Works," to be uncharacteristically difficult to navigate. Chronologically scrambled, this four-CD set also contains so many recordings by other musicians that Hopkins gets pushed aside, as it were, half way through his own retrospective. Yes, this is a wonderful grab bag of Texas blues recordings cut during the eventful years between 1946 and 1956, but Hopkins only appears on 62 out of 106 tracks. Yes, it is exciting to hear so many vintage postwar blues performances by the friends and contemporaries of Hopkins, including Manny Nichols, Lil' Son Jackson, J.D. Edwards, Soldier Boy Houston, Ernest Lewis and Frankie Lee Sims, but with so many guests on board the collection really should have been titled "Lightnin' Slim and His Buddies." The jumbled chronology seems most alarming as Hopkins' very first recordings -- waxed in Los Angeles on November 9, 1946 with pianist Thunder Smith -- show up halfway through Disc C in this second volume of Lightning Special! The inclusion of three rare sides by Thunder Smith without Hopkins is highly commendable, and the music throughout the collection is outstanding. Yet anyone seeking to cultivate an understanding of the man's recorded legacy might well find this sequentially convoluted anthology to be confusing and disorganized. During this time period, Hopkins' records were issued on a bewildering variety of labels, including Aladdin, Gold Star, Score, RPM, Specialty, Sittin' In With, Jax, Modern, Crown, Kent, United and Heritage. If imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, then Nouvelle Vague must be new wave and bossa nova's biggest admirers--and it hasn't gone unnoticed. On NV3, the group performs some of its suave covers of new wave and post-punk classics with some of the era's stars, and the results embody the best and the worst of the rest of the album. Ian McCulloch fits seamlessly into "All My Colors," a typically pretty, wistful Nouvelle Vague track, while Barry Adamson's sneering cool makes a noir version of Magazine's "Parade" the album's standout. However, the group's version of "Master and Servant"--which features a Jew's harp and Martin Gore's booming baritone on the chorus--feels overdone, and not even Terry Hall's cameo can save "Our Lips Are Sealed"'s transformation into a pastoral reverie from seeming a bit silly.
