With guitarist Howard Alden and trombonist Dan Barrett leading a quintet -- any quintet -- the results are bound to be entrancing. The twin leaders are joined by saxophonist Chuck Wilson, bassist Frank Tate, and drummer Jackie Williams on Live in '95, and the results meet all expectations. The package has also been sweetened by the guest appearance of singer Terrie Richards on several cuts. As the Alden-Barrett fan might expect, the album is loaded with standards, but the set is never overly predictable or familiar. One of the best-known cuts, the Ira and George Gershwin's "Fascinating Rhythm," receives an incredible nine-minute workout, while Richards' take on "Jeepers Creepers" removes the song from novelty status. Alden and Barrett also bring in oddities like Johnny St. Cyr's "Oriental Strut" and the less-than-traditional "Ask Me Now" by Thelonious Monk. As one might guess, long versions of "When Lights Are Low" and "Savoy Blues" leave lots of room for great solo work. Alden's guitar is forever tasteful, while Barrett's trombone adds a vintage flavor to the proceedings. Richards' light-toned vocals add a bit of variety, with a swinging take on "It's Now or Never" and a gentle rendition of "Skylark." Live in '95 is simply great mainstream jazz that will please fans of all the players involved. ~ Ronnie D. Lankford, Jr.

Live In '95 album
$8.09 The master of the seven-string guitar, George Van Eps, joins the rising young jazz guitarist Howard Alden, which works perfectly in spite of a 45-year difference in age and different approaches to the guitar. Van Eps' chordal style meshes perfectly with Alden's single note lines in part because of the younger man's study of the senior's recordings and Alden's quick ear and gift for harmony. In any case, it was an obvious thrill for Alden to play with the experienced Van Eps, who literally invented the seven-string guitar (also played by Bucky Pizzarelli) and would soon be added to Alden's musical arsenal. The second of four CDs that they would make together prior to Van Eps' death in 1998, they play a mix of popular standards and show tunes from the 1930s, '40s and '50s. Highlights include a lyrical "What's New." a deliberate "I Could Write a Book," and an intricate "All the Things You Are," along with less frequently played chestnuts like the swinging "It's Wonderful." Van Eps is unaccompanied ...

Live In '95 music CDs
$10.65 Howard Alden and Bucky Pizzarelli played together a number of times over the years during jazz parties and in concerts, though the two seven-string guitarists never made a full CD together until In a Mellow Tone (though Alden appeared on a few tracks of Pizzarelli's A Portrait). Both heirs to the legacy of guitarist George Van Eps (who popularized the instrument), these two masters make magic on any session in which either of them takes place; combining the two meant that there was no reason for any additional players. With the extra ...
