Coup De Theatre
$10.69 As more and more great rappers find the underground is the perfect place to camp -- for the respect and freedom, if not the royalties and pay-offs -- records like Aceyalone's Love & Hate will, fortunately, become a more common occurrence. Released on Project Blowed, an open-mic night that gradually morphed into a winning record label, the album is a simple, straight-ahead match of excellent MC with great producers. Four of the best tracks come from PMD, front-loaded and featuring big-pimpin' beats and a clutch of cutting, digital effects. Def Jux's RJD2 contributes fractured, glittering productions to "Lost Your Mind" and "Takeoff," and the same label's El-P drops by to produce and drop rhymes over the dense, apocalyptic "City of Shit." Aceyalone also rises to the challenge on another high-profile underground soundclash, "Lights Out" featuring Antipop Consortium, picking up and casting off a dozen vocal pseudonyms in a single verse. His rhymes are among the best of his career, and he covers a lot of ground over 15 cuts; nearly every time he makes a record, he makes it clear that rap music has so much possibility that's never dreamed of by most on a major label. Whether he's trading licks with Oakland hero Casual on a hard-hitting jam ("Let Me Hear Sumn"), or talking directly to the listener, recounting ...

| | Benny Golson That's Funky CD (2000)
Coup De Theatre
$12.09 Saxophonist/composer/arranger Benny Golson, though an unfamiliar name, is practically a jazz institution. Golson wrote such jazz standards as "I Remember Clifford" and "Whisper Not." He's played with, or arranged for, countless jazz and non-jazz performers, among them Dizzy Gillespie, Eric Dolphy, Art Blakey, Eric Burdon, Connie Francis, Quincy Jones and Art Farmer.
With THAT'S FUNKY, the emphasis is on Golson's rich, robust, blues-inflected tenor saxophone. He also pays tribute to the funkier side of the jazz tradition, sometimes referred to as "soul jazz." Lee Morgan's hit "Sidewinder" gets a loose-limbed, swaggering treatment, with a bristling solo from trumpeter Nat Adderley, whose own classic "Work Song" gets a similar treatment. Here, Golson's sly, wild tones prove he's not stuck in the pre-1960s past. The trio of Monty Alexander, Ray Drummond, and Marvin "Smitty" Smith keep the groove going throughout with tight, tasty, rippling ...

| | Gwen Stefani Love.Angel.Music.Baby. CD (2004) (Import) Bonus Track
Coup De Theatre
$15.75 Historically, it's a tricky endeavor for the singer from an enormously successful band to embark on a solo career. Gwen Stefani, the glamorous vocalist for No Doubt, sidesteps the issue on her first solo album, LOVE, ANGEL, MUSIC, BABY, by largely eschewing the No Doubt sound. In its place, there's a strong emphasis on the R&B and hip-hop flavors that were hinted at in preceding No Doubt records. Towards that end, Stefani gamely enlists the assistance of Dr. Dre, the Neptunes, Andre 3000 of Outkast, and others, on an album that references everything from Japanese pop culture ("Harajuku Girls") to FIDDLER ON ...
