WEIGHTING is a collection of outtakes from the sessions that produced the 1994 Rollins Band Album WEIGHT.

There was a two-year period between the Rollins Band's most renowned albums -- 1992's The End of Silence and 1994's Weight -- but that's not to say the bandmembers just sat on their bums and did nothing. Of course, there was the mammoth tour in support of Silence, which saw the group share the stage with the likes of the Red Hot Chili Peppers and the Beastie Boys, but the Rollins Band also had to regroup after the exit of bassist Andrew Weiss and work in new member Melvin Gibbs. The group wound up penning a healthy amount of material for Weight, resulting in several tracks that fell through the cracks -- either appearing as B-sides, on movie soundtracks, or shelved entirely. But come 2004, a comp of these rarely heard tracks was issued as Weighting, which includes such outtakes as "Fall Guy," "I See Through," and "Right Here Too Much," as well as bonus live cuts -- "Liar," "Volume 4," etc. However, several tracks featuring respected free jazz saxophonist Charles Gayle are the real attractions of this set. The Rollins Band always had roots deep in jazz, but this is where they finally "went for it," as evidenced by such standouts as "Miles Jam #2." Powering thru two discs' worth of songs from both lineups of the Rollins Band, The Only Way to Know for Sure is a tight, focused live record that easily overshadows not only Rollins Band's early live output, but also the last two studio records. The live version of songs from Get Some Go Again and Nice are more powerful and meaty than their somewhat clean studio versions, and the new Rollins Band puts a little more muscle into some old material like "Low So" and "Disconnect." Obviously, one would assume that since these guys spend a whole lotta damn time on the road, that a live record would be great, not to mention a good starting point to get an overview of some of this band's (as well as the original lineup's) best material ~ Chris True

The resurrected Helmet pits a growlier Page Hamilton against a new rhythm section, but that's about the only change. Size Matters stutters just like the old days, and favors skewed melodies that, even if they're a little slower or more layered, still sound like New York City in 1990. "Crashing Foreign Cars," for example, could be part two of Strap It On's "Blacktop." There's Hamilton-branded guitar freakery here -- check the bleating car horn intro to "Enemies" -- and opener "Smart" is as economic as metal derivation is going to get in the new millennium, when the genre's dominated by bombast and ridiculously compressed electric guitars.
