Despite his foreign passport, dB has spent over a decade as one of America's leading ambassadors of drum'n'bass, launching the sound on U.S. shores with his definitive NASA club night, releasing half-a-dozen legit mixes along with scores of underground mixtapes, a spate of quality productions and of course, running the monumental Breakbeat Science label, record store, and perhaps most importantly, the message board, which serves as one of the centerpieces of the jungle community. But beyond community building, dB is first and foremost a DJ, as this mix proves, opening with his glistening production with Stakka, "Groupies." An amusing sentiment from this committed family man. Db and Stakka's productions appear throughout the mix, along with fellow New York émigré DJ Dara and Pieter K who combined created nine out of this disc's 15 cuts. But the consistency in producers doesn't equal monotony in sounds. Quite the contrary, each selected track offers its own distinct hook, usually in the form of some meticulously processed synth phrase or just as likely a diva-powered vocal sample. The tempo remains on the lighter side of the d'n'b spectrum, becoming downright watery on the piano lead "Saturnine." But dB has never aimed squarely at the jugular, always preferring to slink his way into the dancer's minds before moving their feet. For committed fans, a new dB mix is always a reason to celebrate. And for those not yet aligned with the cause, dB remains the perfect starting point for initiation. ~ Joshua Glazer

| Breakbeat Science: Exercise 4 Music Review Average Rating: (4.7 out of 5 stars) Execellent Choice If you enjoy a cool, mellow drum n bass mix Db is your man. He puts forth great effort in this mix sticking to his usual of a nice, smooth, calm D'n'B mix. Nice and easy not too hard hitting for when you just need a good relaxation moment. I definitely recommend for the D'n'B freak at heart.

$7.29 When drum'n'bass albums fail -- and they often do -- it's usually either by sounding too much like smooth jazz with polite little skittering beats, or by being too harsh and abrasive. Neil Zarama (a.k.a. Juju) splits the difference nicely between those two pitfalls, offering a mix-CD that keeps things texturally interesting and rhythmically sturdy, without either pushing the listener away, or lulling him to ...

Breakbeat Science: Exercise 4
$7.35 This is a continuous in-the-mix CD compiled and mixed by Klute.
Few genres of dance music are quite as formally hidebound as drum'n'bass, a style that is defined by its stuttering, warp-speed breakbeats, minor keys, and usually chilly, robotic flavor. Depart too far from those conventions and the junglist massive tend to start losing interest quickly; stick too close to them and no one else wants to listen for more than a minute or two. Because the fact is that while drum'n'bass really is some of the most exciting dance music there is, at its most formally correct it's only interesting for three or four minutes, tops -- then it just gets tiresome. The best DJs are those who can both follow the rules and maintain a non-dancing listener's interest over the course of a whole album; luckily, Tom Withers (aka Klute) is one of those. On the third installment in the Breakbeat Science label's excellent Exercise series, ...

| | Armik Mar De Suenos CD (2005)
Breakbeat Science: Exercise 4
$12.79 On 2005's MAR DE SUENOS, flamenco guitarist Armik continues where his previous efforts AMOR DE GUITARRA and CAFÉ ROMANTICO left off. Like these other two albums, Armik's virtuosic guitar is featured in a slickly produced setting. He is backed up by Latin percussion, light keyboard accompaniment, and punchy electric bass on most of these tracks.
Armik's technique dazzles throughout. Predictably, each composition on MAR DE SUENOS is firmly entrenched in the Spanish guitar tradition, although some attempts have been made to bring out the music's inherent romantic qualities and pop sensibilities. For example, songs such as "Azul" and ...
