Every press release about Annihilation Time describes them as a hardcore band, but the fact that their songs feature heavy but relatively clean-sounding guitars, contain the odd solo or two, and add vocals that are actually sung instead of barked (well almost, anyway) suggest that perhaps they're more of a hard rock band facing an identity crisis. Whatever! Their eponymous debut, while slashing through its eight songs with hardcore efficiency and barely twenty minutes, actually recalls the hyperactive metallic-punk of bands like the Hellacopters and Backyard Babies -- not Black Flag or Agnostic Front. Which is all well and good since, at the end of the day, the So-Cal quintet shows a decent set of songwriting chops to go with their sharp delivery. To wit, "Down the Street" and "Feel It Inside" are solid, not magical, but occasional near-gems emerge in high-energy headbangers like "Annihilate," "1962" and "Sand Lot." A little more stylistic diversity would be nice, too, but there's no doubt that solving their aforementioned identity issues is probably tantamount to Annihilation Time's future achievements. With Adam Lambert, American Idol finally got a finalist who was completely, utterly contemporary, aware of what's hip in music and culture and aware of how music is made and consumed in 2009, never seeming to try to follow fads or set trends, just embodying the time. Mercifully, he came in second to Kris Allen, for if he came in first he may have had to tame his self-styled glamazon ways. The Netherlands' Rutger Zuydervelt (Machinefabriek) and American multi-instrumentalist Aaron Martin present their first-ever collaboration. Zuydervelt is somewhat prolific; his steady flow of super-limited edition 3" CD-Rs seem to slip out relentlessly month after month, and Martin has one full-length album to his name so far. Between them, the duo has come up with a project that is far more than the sum of its parts. The Cello Recycling project was originally commissioned for use in an art gallery; Zuydervelt took cello improvisations from Aaron Martin and built them into the slow-burning post-ambient monster that is "Cello Recycling." The second track takes Martin's original piece, morphed by Rutger, and then once again distorted, where the original piece is drowned in a bath of murky water, submerging it in all different directions it has never before drifted. The two pieces together are perfectly complimentary, showing two sides of a tarnished coin -- one giving us pent-up emotion, fizzing and shuffling awkwardly until it explodes majestically, the other giving us a peaceful reflection as seen through the eyes of a serial killer who has just completed his final gift to the world. An inventive and incredibly beautiful look at the cello as an instrument and noise-making tool; this is an absolute must for fans of post-classical music, the droning beauty of Stars of the Lid or even the moody post-rock of Godspeed You! Black Emperor. Moody, kinetic and hugely enjoyable stuff, this needs to be played loud and absorbed totally.
The two lengthy pieces that make up this short collaboration between American musician Aaron Martin, here playing, unsurprisingly, cello, and Dutch performer Rutger Zuydervelt, better known under his Machinefabriek guise for his many creative and darkly experimental electronic compositions, make for perfect mood music on an unsettled late night.
