Tex Mex Groove music CDs
$8.99 AS TIME GOES BY VOL. 2 was nominated for the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album.
On his second album tackling the Great American Songbook of the album's subtitle, Rod Stewart sounds even more energized, and seems to insert more of himself into his delivery of gems by the Gershwins, Rodgers & Hart, et al. Though two veteran pop-rock producers (Richard Perry and Phil Ramone) handle most of the tracks, they wisely make no attempt to "rock up" any of the arrangements, instead leaving Stewart to explore his balladeer side to its fullest.
One may wonder why the Perry-produced tracks feature layers of string synthesizer, when Ramone's cuts employ the real thing; presuming that there was no lack of budget here, it must have been some inscrutable aesthetic choice. While those more accustomed to a traditional approach may be put off by this aspect, or by a pair of duets with Cher and Queen Latifah, this album isn't for them anyway. It's for those who have followed Stewart through all the stylistic byways of his career and are ready to go with him around one more bend.

$12.69 Someone at Drag City gets a gold star for this release. Jumping on the mid-2000s folk explosion, the esteemed indie label goes straight to its British source: Bert Jansch. If there's one man as influential in folk circles as Bob Dylan, it is Jansch. His finger-picking style drastically altered the possibilities for acoustic guitars and influenced nearly every luminary of British folk, including Richard Thompson, Nick Drake, and the Incredible String Band.
As with Vashti Bunyan's 2005 EP with Animal Collective, BLACK SWAN's strength comes from pairing the folk legend with younger followers: Devendra Barnhart, Beth Orton, and Jansch's son Adam. The album's centerpieces focus on Orton, who has saved her best performances for Jansch: the traditional "Katie Cruel" and Jansch's own "When the Sun Comes Up." "High Days" and "A Woman Like You" ...

$21.25 The good news, though, is that while the set focuses almost exclusively on the band's major-label years and features many tracks from their three albums as a trio (UP, REVEAL, and AROUND THE SUN), it still smokes. Peter Buck's mesmerizing arpeggios set aflame opener "I Took Your Name" from MONSTER and the fan fave "Orange Crush" from GREEN, while Michael Stipe's undeniable pipes captivate on UP's gospel-tinged "Walk Unafraid" and the protest song "Final Straw" from AROUND THE SUN. Twice the band dips into I.R.S. territory on a tremolo-soaked "Cuyahoga" and a revved-up "Don't Go Back to Rockville," in which bassist Mike Mills gets his star turn on lead vocals.
The collection also includes a DVD of the entire show, which reveals that although the band was never groomed for stadiums like their '80s counterparts U2, they could still whip a crowd into a frenzy and devastate live--even with a hired gun on the drums.
A document of a single concert performed in the post-Bill Berry year of 2006.
The 14th album from modern rock's most acclaimed band is R.E.M.'s first live album, presented in a 2 CD/DVD package. This DVD documents performances in February 2005 at The Point indoor venue in Dublin, Ireland, a city that has become a second home to the band. With a set list of nearly 2 hours, spanning the band's entire career, this set offers their greatest hits on stage. Blue Leach directs.
While the title alone is enough to make any longtime fan salivate--given that this is the first official live release in the Athens band's formidable catalog--a serious caveat applies. This is not the live companion piece to their other 2007 offering, the excellent and career-defining AND I FEEL FINE...: THE BEST OF THE I.R.S. YEARS 1982-1987, but a document of a single ...
