A decade after they first fell from the sky, the U.K. quintet the Flaming Stars continue to shine and stun on their seventh studio disc, Named and Shamed. Sounding like Lloyd Cole fronting the Bad Seeds, writer/vocalist Max Decharne steers the versatile group through a set that is at times loud and riotous ("Where the Beautiful People Go"), soft and brooding ("She's Gone"), or über-cool and jazzy (the piano and finger snaps of "The Marabou Shuffle"). Rarely disappointing, the title cut embraces flamenco while "Spilled Your Paint" barks and bites like vintage Mark E. Smith. Tack on the fact that this disc was completed in just over eight days, and Named and Shamed can't help but qualify as brilliant. ~ John D. Luerssen

Uncut (p.119) - 4 stars out of 5 - "Max D‚charn‚ sings with authentic pulp pathos; alcohol, smoke and heartache steam up his wry, weary window on the world....Criminally good." Named And Shamed album
$12.09 Nothing less than an indie-rock milestone, this is what happens when a number of musicians from the Canadian post-rock scene (including members of Godspeed You Black Emperor, A Silver Mt. Zion, and Do Make Say Think) abandon their extended-jam conceptualizing in favor of short, optimistic, pop-oriented songs. Things start out in a jazzy, bass-heavy space before morphing into "KC Accidental," a guitar-layered track that sounds like the Allman Brothers covering Sonic Youth's "Teenage Riot." Catchy hooks triplicate alongside hand clapping, fuzz guitar, and Brendan Canning's whispered vocals on "Stars and Sons," while the mellow, acoustic "Looks Just Like the Sun" gives way to the twangy neo-Tropicalia and cockeyed (but uplifting and cohesive) experimentalism of "Pacific Theme."
Emily Haines (of the Metrics) lends a vocal to "Anthems for a Seventeen Year-Old Girl," which ends in a roundelay of swirling violins and banjo. "Cause = Time" is an even more tuneful brother to "Stars and Sons" ...

Named And Shamed music CDs
$13.09 Although Vancouver's scene in the late '70s and early '80s was dominated by first-wave hardcore acts like D.O.A. and the Subhumans, the West Coast city's breakout new wave act was the altogether poppier Pointed Sticks. Although they only managed one album, 1980s Perfect Youth (itself recently reissued by Joey Keithley's Sudden Death label), the quartet released a long string of singles for the pioneering U.K. indie Stiff Records, ...
| | M Ward Post-War CD (2006)
Named And Shamed songs
$12.19 The title of M. Ward's fifth full-length, POST-WAR, begs the question, post which war? From early 20th-century folk blues to Tin Pan Alley hooks to the various indie-rock schools of the early 2000s, Ward's music works as a suitable elegy for the wounded and dead from across the landscape of American ...
| | Good, The Bad & The Queen Good, The Bad & The Queen CD (2007)
Named And Shamed album
$9.89 Expectations run supremely high for a group like The Good, The Bad & The Queen. In addition to being Damon Albarn's first project since the Gorillaz, the GB&Q are also quite the super group, with Clash bassist Paul Simonon, Verve guitarist Simon Tong, and legendary drummer Tony Allen--the man who put the beat in Afrobeat--rounding out the line-up. Adding to this stellar cast is producer/DJ Danger Mouse, who mans the boards and twists the knobs.
The group's 2007 self-titled debut is supremely well-crafted, featuring deeply layered electronic textures that recall the Gorillaz at their most atmospheric and warp the propulsive piano and guitar lines in a playfully foreboding manner. And while Allen doesn't exactly open up the way fans of his work with Fela Kuti might hope, he expertly anchors the whole affair, gently shifting the rhythms and pacing of the tracks without disrupting Albarn's expansive, slightly noir-ish new approach to Britpop.
This project began in 2004 when Damon Albarn & Simon Tong ...

Named And Shamed album
$20.95 Mohamed Naiem, a mainstay of the Egyptian nightclub virtuoso scene, is likely best-known internationally for his work behind Hossam Ramzy on a number of albums. Here, he's accompanied by Ramzy on percussion, but he gets the chance to shine at the forefront on both the nay and the kawala. While the compositions are largely written by Naiem and Ramzy together, the tone is distinctly different from the ...
| | Terry Evans Blues For Thought CD (1994) (Import) United Kingdom
Named And Shamed CD music
$18.39 Produced by Evans' former employer Ry Cooder, Blues for Thought often sounds like a Cooder album with a great singer. Better yet, Cooder has retained the services of some A-list studio cats, but manages to make them sound like drunken denizens of a Mississippi roadhouse. With the legendary Jim Keltner leading the way with his powerhouse thwacka-thwacka, and Cooder laying down his usual ultra-soulful licks, Evans and company groove mightily though a collection of first-rate ...
