Given the connection between re: and Godspeed You Black Emperor! (one half of re:, Ian Ilavsky, is a co-founder of GSYBE!'s label, Constellation), it should come as no surprise that this record incorporates a collection of infinitely building noise-scapes, focused on the hiss of white noise. But what makes it truly intriguing is the rhythmic pining that takes the form of steps-through-the-ceiling clump ("On Golden Pond"), machines-in-the-distance echo ("Golem") and even Speedy J-styled industrial-techno breaks ("Orientalism as a Humanism" and "Radio Free Ramadi"). Given the diversity of "beats," it is wrong to corner this project with MIT professor Aden Evens as mere ambient. "Pawk" even offers a taste of melody via some gentle piano played towards the lower register. But it comes as a continuation of the chirping fancy of the appropriately titled "Lasers, Tracers, Radar Drones." Alms is at its best when it mutates the sound of endless metal scrapes and evolves into a sturdy industrial clang, but the shorter songs that pad out the extended cast iron dirges make it a far more interesting listen. ~ Joshua GlazerThe Wire (p.73) - "[An] excellent digitally tweaked assemblage of field recordings and acoustic instrumentation..." | | Le Fly Pan Am N'Ecoutez Pas CD (2004)
Alms music CDs
$12.89 Yet another side project from a key member of Godspeed You Black Emperor! (guitarist Roger Tellier-Craig is the leader of this loosely constructed group), Fly Pan Am's first two albums sounded basically like demos and instrumental outtakes; they were often interesting, but usually terribly slight. N'Écoutez Pas, despite its self-deprecating Francophone title, is Fly Pan Am's first fully formed release, and it stands with the best work of Tellier-Craig's other band. Though at times the album's blend of found-sound tape manipulations, deadpan French vocals, wayward guitar freakouts, and droning, deliberately repetitive rhythms sounds like a collision between very early Stereolab and Sonic Youth at their most ...
| | Thee Silver Mt Zion Memorial O Horses In The Sky CD (2005)
Alms songs
$12.89 A splinter group of popular post-rock ensemble Godspeed You Black Emperor, A Silver Mt. Zion (or, as they are referred to here, Thee Silver Mt. Zion Memorial Orchestra & Tra-La-La Band) is comprised of GYBE guitarist/pianist/singer Efrim, bassist Thierry, violinist Sophie, and other guests. But whereas the band's previous albums sometimes sounded like replications of GYBE's layered, largely instrumental formula, HORSES IN THE SKY is a different kettle of fish altogether. Raw, stripped-down, and vocal-centered, Silver Mt. Zion's fourth album is hushed, mesmerizing, and deeply affecting.
The opening track, "God Bless Our Dead Marines," begins with Efrim's tortured, yelped vocals over pizzicato strings, before dropping into a shifting Balkan dance melody and a chain of surreal lyrics about politics, Nina Simone, and drug abuse. On "Mountains Made of Steam," a mournful vocal tag, that sounds like ...
| | Mission Of Burma Obliterati CD (2006)
Alms album
$10.15 While it took Mission of Burma more than two decades to follow up its 1982 debut with 2004's ONOFFON, the Boston-based post-punk act needed only two years to create their third full-length outing, THE OBLITERATI. As on its predecessor, this '06 album rumbles along with both heft and speed, and shows a band remarkably hitting its stride more than 20 years into its career. Core members Roger Miller (guitar/vocals), Clint Conley (bass/vocals), and Peter Prescott (drums/vocals) all contribute numerous tracks, and although fierce, highly percussive tunes are the order ...

| | Iggy Pop Extended Versions CD (2002)
Alms album
$6.09 Boy, is it hard to keep track of all the jillions of Iggy Pop live albums that have appeared over the years. At last count, the only official live set to be issued with the authority of Mr. Pop was 1978's TV Eye (1977 Live), which is pretty mind-boggling when you think of all the live sets that have seen the light of day. It's gotten so out of hand that now certain unofficial live releases are being reissued under different titles and with altered track listings, as evidenced by the Iggy Pop edition of the Extended Versions series. Nearly all of the tracks are plucked from the previously issued Live at the Ritz NYC (1986), a show taped while Pop was supporting his Blah Blah Blah release. After spending the early part of the decade almost "sleepwalking" through shows due to his relapse back into substance abuse, Pop launched his first proper tour in a few years by this point. Backed by a worthy backing ...
