One of the original batch of bands that started mixing indie rock, post-punk, and disco-influenced rhythms in the '90s, Q and Not U return with Power, an album that nods to dance-punk's moment in the sun and also finds them adding more dimensions to their already versatile sound. Like Les Savy Fav, Q and Not U are among the strongest songwriters working in this style, and on Power, they're equally adept at short, sharp shocks like "L.A.X." and more introspective pieces such as "Dine." This ebb and flow makes the album less forceful than previous work like No Kill No Beep Beep, but it also makes Power more interesting, even if the ping-ponging between quietly quirky pieces like "Throw Back Your Head," an oddly folky, flute-driven song, and brainy, spazzy pop like "Wet Work" is disconcerting at first. It's tempting to single out Power's most singular moments, like the medieval harmonies on "District Night Prayer," as the album's highlights, because they're such a departure; however, "Book of Flags" and "Tag-Tag" are prime examples of the band's undeniably kinetic punk-funk. "Wonderful People" and "Beautiful Beats" are even more danceable, but still retain that paranoid, too-smart-for-their-own-good feel of all of Q and Not U's work. This feeling comes to the fore on the tense, "Glass Onion"-esque "Collect the Diamonds" and "X-Polynation," which both echo the trend of mixing politics and dance-punk, but do so more subtly, and timelessly, than the rants of !!! and Radio 4. Even when there are plenty of other bands working in a similar style, Q and Not U remain more distinctive and harder to classify than many of their peers, which makes Power an exciting album and proof that the band has variety and vitality to spare. ~ Heather Phares

1 star Terrible. If you like dance music this is for you.
I was wholly disappointed in the direction that Q And Not U went with this album. In 2000, Q And Not U was a breath of fresh air where indie rock had been quite stagnant in terms of unique music. Power, on the other hand is a poppy 80's influenced disaster. If you like the previous two albums; avoid this one like the plague. It is a good thing that this band broke up because if "Power" is any indication of where they were headed - they did everyone a favor.

Pretty Girls Make Graves New Romance CD  (2003)

How many times have you seen it happen: indie hotshot band makes a swell record, gets lots of press, builds a fan base, signs to a bigger label, and immediately releases a completely horrible record that loses all its fans and turns the critics into a frothing pack of wild dogs. Quite often. Pretty Girls Make Graves manages to nimbly sidestep this tragedy by signing with Matador (just a small leap up in size from Lookout) and releasing a record that is actually a whole lot better than anything the group has previously done. In fact, it is better than one could imagine them ever being. The New Romance is a dramatic, thoughtful, emotional, imaginative, and hard-rocking effort full of songs that will tug at your heartstrings anthemically. The band, with help from producer Phil Ek, tones down its sonic assault a couple of notches and allows the music to open up and breathe some. Songs like "Something Bigger, Something Brighter," the desperate-sounding "The Teeth Collector," and "This Is Our Emergency" are epics built around the spiraling guitars of Nathan Thelen and Jay Clark, manic yet tightly controlled drums, fuzzy keyboards, and Andrea Zollo's soaring vocals; she's lost all traces of riot grrrl tunelessness but none of the toughness or power. There are ...

There's a creepy goth veneer crawling underneath Stills lead singer Tim Fletcher's vocals as he sings lines of timeless ennui such as "I'm just so bored of wasting my time/love and death are always on my mind," an undercurrent of dread not unlike Robert Smith or Morrissey coming down from a particularly potent sadness bender. Even happy-sounding titles like LOGIC WILL BREAK YOUR HEART's opening single "Still in Love Song," are portraits in lurking danger, and about-to-boil-over lust and anger. And it works; as overlapping guitars somewhere between power pop and new wave swirl around the intricate, neurotically-Nietzsche-ian lyrics, a rapture develops, as does a downpour of ...

Precocious indie wunderkind Conor Oberst (AKA Bright Eyes) released two full-length albums--I'M WIDE AWAKE, IT'S MORNING and DIGITAL ASH IN A DIGITAL URN--in early 2005, and the latter proved to be a stylistic curveball that veered sharply away from his emo-folk sound and into synth-heavy electronic music. The results sometimes recall a more pop-savvy version of Oberst's Saddle Creek labelmates the Faint, particularly on the gloomy "Down in a Rabbit Hole" and the New Wave-inspired single "Take It Easy (Love Nothing)." By 2005, Nebraska native Oberst had made New York City his second home, and the urban influence shows through in the form of cool, burbling electronica (the light, airy "Hit the Switch") ...

In early 2005, young indie icon Conor Oberst (AKA Bright Eyes) unveiled two full-length albums--I'M WIDE AWAKE, IT'S MORNING and DIGITAL ASH IN A DIGITAL URN. Whereas the latter proved to be a departure into electronic music, the former sticks to Oberst's established sound, which combines the urgency and heart-on-the-sleeve sentiment of emo-rock with twangy, down-home feel of alt-country and folk music. I'M WIDE AWAKE begins with Oberst telling a story that morphs into "At the Bottom of Everything," a jangly, upbeat tune featuring My Morning Jacket's Jim James on backing vocals. Throughout the record, Oberst reaches nearly hysterical peaks, seemingly overcome with emotion as his wavering voice, which often recalls Violent Femmes' Gordon Gano, veers almost, ...

I Will
Tracy Lyons I Will CD  (2006)

Power album
CD $8.99  Audio Samples
On her fine second album, I Will, Tracy Lyons possesses such a honeyed, delicate voice that it's often difficult to reconcile that light touch with the often tough words she's singing. Lyons never skimps on raw emotion, and she's not afraid to cut deep, yet that softie voice of hers often sounds like it's trilling a lullaby even as she lays out the circumstances behind the betrayal of a lover: "I'm on a crazy ride/Feelin' so compromised/Knowin' you turned on me," she sings in "Not You," one of the album's early highlights. The guitars are slashing away in a Hendrix-ian wah-wah rage, and the drums and bass are blazing and bashing. But Lyons keeps her cool, maintaining her even-keeled temperament even as the swaggering band shifts into power pop/power-chord overdrive for the chorus. That band rocks mighty hard when it needs to and soothes appropriately when Lyons -- who wrote all of the songs -- turns down the heat. The album's most memorable moments occur when she finds the ideal balance somewhere in between. During the slow and steady build of "Yes," for example, a survivor moves cautiously forward ("It's a miracle ...
