A rare example of a band whose repertoire is entirely composed by its drummer, The Motet's unique blend of Afro-Beat, Afro-Cuban, Latin, Funk, and Jazz traditions defies categorization. The 2004 studio album Music For Life is another signpost in their career displaying the jazzier leanings of the band's sound. The propulsive percussion, buttery funk, and mesmerizing improvisations are intact, but more emphasis has been placed on melodic interplay between guitar, keys, sax, and bass. The result is an instrumental reinvention of the sonic soulfulness that has become the band's trademark.

Music For Life album
$6.05 PEACE BEYOND PASSION was nominated for a 1997 Grammy Award for Best R&B Album.
On her second album, Me'Shell NdegeOcello continues to use a seamless blend of funk, jazz, rap and soul as a bed for her sociosexual observations. There's a spiritual bent, as well, to PEACE BEYOND PASSION, in songs that take on racism, homophobia and other societal ills. The centerpieces of the album are three songs named for books of the Bible: "Deuteronomy: Niggerman," "Ecclesiastes: Free My Heart" and "Leviticus: Faggot."
The music is less hip-hop-oriented than that on her debut, PLANTATION LULLABIES, and fleshed-out with heavier jazz nuances and '70s funk shadings. It's helped along in those directions by saxophonist Joshua Redman (he played on the debut, too) and one-time Prince guitarist Wendy Melvoin. Their interplay with NdegeOcello, who swings confidently on bass, blurs many musical lines. NdegeOcello adds a Curtis Mayfield soul spin to a version of Bill Withers' "Who Is He And And What Is He To You," the one cover song here. Chunks of wah-wah guitar juice the beat along, while Paul Riser's aggressive string arrangement and Billy Preston's organ ensure the authenticity of this reading.

| | Gerald Jay Markoe Chakra Balancing CD (1995)
Music For Life CD music
$12.79 While prolific New Age composer Markoe gently minds the wooden flutes, chimes, and other soothing instruments in the background, Stacey Dean lays out some tranquilizing instruction designed to align and balance the listener's charkas (the spinning wheels of light inside the body that serve as energy markers and symbols to aid focus in meditation.). Newcomers to the meditations involved in chakra balancing will find this a perfect place to start, as Dean keeps it very simple, patiently instructing the listener breath by breath, making it easy to surrender to the moment and slip into an altered state of consciousness, ...

| | Bill Frisell History, Mystery CDs (2008)
Music For Life album
$17.85 Guitar maestro Bill Frisell outdoes himself in ambition and diversity on the two-disc HISTORY, MYSTERY. Performing with a rich string-laden octet, the artist threads together 30 tracks, some of which derive from his collaboration with cartoonist Jim Woodring entitled "Mysterio Sympatico," and others drawn from the music Frisell composed for the NPR series STORIES FROM THE HEART OF THE LAND.
As always, Frisell's eclectic style freely blends genres together, mixing chamber music with free jazz, front porch Americana with high-minded atmospherics. ...
