Peter & The Commisar album
$15.89 Upon the release of this debut album, Massachusetts native Dar Williams quickly won comparisons to Joan Baez and Joni Mitchell. Such assessments are complimentary, but Williams doesn't take herself quite as seriously as those seminal soprano folksingers. Williams has a wicked sense of humor. She delivers her witty story-songs in a conversational manner, accompanying her clear, high voice with clean acoustic guitar. Sisters Katryna and Nerissa Nields provide backup vocals on several songs.
Williams is blessed with an excellent memory of her childhood experiences and with a vivid imagination. In "When I Was a Boy," she sings about her adolescence as if she had grown up male. This plaintive and introspective, yet subtly humorous, ...

| | Primitive And The Passionate/Les Baxter Balladeers CD (2004)
Peter & The Commisar music CDs
$10.69 Another in Collectables' series of Les Baxter two-fers, The Primitive and the Passionate/Les Baxter's Balladeers collects a pair of the composer/conductor's early-'60s albums. With song titles like "Peking Tiger" and "A Night with Cleopatra," 1962's The Primitive and the Passionate is a pretty typical -- and entertaining -- mix of Baxter's instrumental exotica and standards. And, while the relatively straightforward renditions of "Laura," "Little Girl Blue," and "A Taste of Honey" might be a little too tasteful to pique the interest of modern exotica/lounge fans, their supreme smoothness is almost as much of an accomplishment as the album's more whimsical moments. These include the spooky, mariachi-lounge of "Fiesta Brava"; the Latin rhythms and smoky flutes on "Congalé"; and "Bird of Paradise," a sunny, string-driven track that builds on Baxter's quintessential hit, "Quiet Village." Les Baxter's Balladeers, ...

$10.69 Don't be put off by the strikingly cheesy album cover, IT'S JUST THE NIGHT is a jewel in the crown of hard-hitting bluegrass champs the Del McCoury Band; it even garnered Del and the boys a Grammy nomination. Just as they did on their previous release (appropriately titled ...
| | Ben Pollack Vol 6:Whoopee Makers CD (2004)
Peter & The Commisar music CDs
$16.49 This CD, which is volume six out of seven discs that reissue the complete output of the Ben Pollack band of 1926-32, is actually the Pollack ensemble without the leader. Issued under many pseudonyms (and with Ray Bauduc on drums rather than Pollack), the group is best known as the Whoopee Makers. Several groups used that name (including ensembles led by Jack Pettis and the Duke Ellington Orchestra) but these 24 numbers (which have six alternate takes placed at the end of the program) are believed to be all of the selections during this time period that featured the Pollack sidemen. In the personnel on most of the numbers are trombonist Jack Teagarden, clarinetist Benny Goodman (who also takes one solo on alto) and trumpeter Jimmy McPartland. Some of the selections are very good examples of late-'20s hot jazz, including "Cause I'm in Love," "Digga Digga Doo" and "Bugle Call Rag." Some numbers find ...

Peter & The Commisar music CDs
$18.25 Wyldefyre is a talented musical duo who perform, in period costume, at renaissance, medieval and pirate festivals. In addition to being multi-instrumentalists, both are accomplished actors, and their period characterizations further enhance the group's musical performance and audience rapport. Formed in an Irish pub on St. Patrick's Day 2004, the group has three CDs to it's credit (available here at CD Baby) along with an extensive schedule of faire, pub and concert appearances. Musician Bios:Martyn Wylde vocals, guitar, bass, octave mandolin, percussionMartyn's smooth tenor and astonishing 3 1/2 octave vocal range had him headed for a career in music from an early age. Rock music, particularly the 'British Invasion' of the mid-1960s radically changed the direction that career was to take. His driving, yet melodic basslines ...
