With tongues planted firmly in cheek, Southern California's Home Grown stake their claim to you-know-which-neo-punk-trio's throne with their third full-length album and debut for the hugely popular Drive-Thru Records. KINGS OF POP is riddled with rapid-fire pop-punk riffs in the tradition of scene stalwarts Green Day and Blink 182, but isn't afraid to show a melancholic side when it comes to lyrics. "I Love You, Not" and "I?ll Never Fall In Love" provide routes for angst-filled youth to get their everyday aggressions out in a positive way.
One can?t help but maintain a hopeful attitude while singing along to the sunny, harmony-filled choruses of "Cannot Stop the World" or "Second Best," but the edgy guitars set against soaring vocals on "Kiss Me Diss Me" remain the band's calling card. Setting aside their ska roots, the trio moves forward skillfully on KINGS OF POP, blending the musical worlds of power-pop, punk and emo.
Recorded at Big Fish, Encinitas, California; Sonik Wire Studios, Irvine, California.
Home Grown (Rock): J. Trash (vocals, guitar); Adam Lohrbach (vocals, bass guitar); Darren Reynolds (drums).

Kings Of Pop
$11.49 For over half a decade, KC's Get Up Kids garnered a fan base, with music redolent of harder-edged melodic bands such as Superchunk and Jawbox. However, 2002's ON A WIRE, the outfit's first release in three years, finds the fivesome with a sound positively Beatle-esque, or at the very least Badfinger-esque, considering the latter's penchant for sublimely maudlin pop.
Since their inception, the Get Up Kids have possessed the knack for penning fine-etched, intelligent, mesmeric songs, however with ON A WIRE, the band hits its most appealing pop stride. The presence of alt-pop producer extraordinaire Scott Litt, best known for his work with R.E.M., certainly ...
| | Orianthi Believe CD (2009)
Kings Of Pop
$9.09 With her mind-blowing mix of heavy metal guitar prowess and bluesy, soulful vocals, Orianthi will draw some justifiably well-earned comparisons to such giants of rock guitar as Jimi Hendrix and, her own idol, Carlos Santana. On her 2009 sophomore album, BELIEVE, her style hews closer to the finger-frenetic pyrotechnics of such '70s and '80s icons as Eddie Van Halen and Steve Vai. Throw in her ability to sell a lyric and carry a strong melodic vocal phrase while also throwing down some devastating slabs of heavy metal riffage, and she starts to look a lot like the fantasy love child of Prince and Lita Ford. What's even more delicious is how, at face value, BELIEVE fits ...
| | Gov't Mule By A Thread CD (2009)
Kings Of Pop
$12.29 BY A THREAD is Gov't Mule's first studio album since HIGH & MIGHTY was issued in 2006. Since that time, bassist Andy Hess has been replaced by Jorgen Carlsson, though Hess appears on two tracks at the end of the album. Carlsson's playing style is much more aggressive than Hess', and is therefore closer - in spirit anyway - to Gov't Mule's original bassist, the late Allen Woody, though he possesses an adventurous sense of time and is harmonically more colorful than either Woody or Hess. Carlsson and drummer Matt Abst are a solid match, since Abst is a drummer used to shifting time signatures and allowing the unexpected ...

Kings Of Pop
$10.49 His initial fame came from ghost-writing hits for the Motown greats like The Four Tops, The Supremes and The Temptations. He also worked along side Holland-Dozier-Holland. Berry Gordy put him in the studio and produced his all-time hit 'Indiana Wants Me', which became a Top 40 smash. Taylor continued with success overseas with 'Gotta See Jane' and 'There's A Ghost In My House'. This disc marks the first time Taylor's ...

| | Scott Walker 5 Easy Pieces CDs (2004) Remastered; Box Set
Kings Of Pop
$63.49 This excellent box set spans five CDs, each with its own theme. In all there are 93 tracks here representing the wildly diverse output of this mysterious, inimitable vocalist, and a substantial booklet full of notes and photos. The set is available on British import only.
Released in the U.K. in 2004 (and in the U.S. two years later), the Scott Walker box set, IN FIVE EASY PIECES, displays a sly sense of humor (there's nothing "easy" about even his most accessible material) and a fascinating, though sometimes frustrating, theme-based sequence. This non-chronological approach makes room for a wide range of tracks by the revered British-based avant-pop crooner, from his mid-1960s era with the Walker Brothers (the ominous, organ-laden "Archangel") ...
