| | Susan Boyle I Dreamed A Dream CD (2009)
1969 songs
$9.55 Susan Boyle's grand unveiling on Britain's Got Talent was with a song from Les Miserables - the very song that lends this album its title -- and if she could become an international sensation based on a show tune standard, there's no reason for her to change her approach on her debut, since that's the sound that made her a star. Plus, a large part of Boyle's appeal is that she's a middle-aged woman recalling a bygone era when there were singers that appealed to an adult audience by offering soft, stately versions of pop hits and standards. That time was the late `60s and early `70s, and apart from a rather faithful version of Madonna's "You'll See," I Dreamed a Dream could very well have been released all those years ago, as it mixes up the show tunes, gospel, and Christmas carols with covers of Skeeter Davis' "The End of the World," the Rolling Stones' "Wild Horses," and a version of "Daydream Believer" that is ...

$13.65 Those who know Baby Beesh look forward to what he's going to do next. It seems like every time around something has changed; he's working with new people, in a new group, on a new label -- pick and choose from the above. This album is a funky and eclectic adventure with songs as differing as Beesh's music career itself. He's got party tracks, danceable tracks, deep and bassy beats, a reggae-inspired track, and mellow relaxing tunes, too. While the beats draw you in, ...
| | 94 Baker Street CD (2003) (Import) United Kingdom
1969 CD music
$16.19 A slight cautionary note here: although all of the artists on this compilation had affiliations with the Beatles' Apple company in the late '60s, just one (the Iveys, who later became Badfinger) actually recorded for Apple Records. The others -- Focal Point, Grapefruit, Paintbox, Ways and Means, and John Fitch -- released songs administered by Apple's publishing company, without actually releasing material on the Apple label. That clarification noted, this is a decent anthology of obscure late-'60s British rock (ten of the 18 tracks previously unreleased) that's pretty far toward the "pop" side of "pop-psychedelia," as well as bearing a tangential connection to one of the most interesting pop enterprises of the time, Apple. By far the most famous of the performers were the Iveys, and Badfinger fans will be excited by the appearance of five previously unissued Iveys demos here, only one of which ...
