Recorded in 1977, LIVE! IN THE AIR AGE draws most of its set list from the previous year's SUNBURST FINISH. It's clear that Be-Bop Deluxe is invigorated by the concert setting, charging through vibrant renditions of its songs and providing far more instrumental muscle and improvisation than on the studio versions. While the British prog-rock band offers up an energetic version of its single "Ships in the Night," it truly shines when allowing frontman/guitarist Bill Nelson and keyboardist Andrew Clark to stretch out, most notably on the chiming "Life in the Air Age" and the soaring "Blazing Apostles." One of those rare live albums that stands on its own merits, LIVE! IN THE AIR AGE is the sound of an inventive ensemble in top form.
Originally released on white vinyl as a double set in which one disc was an LP while the other was a 12" EP, Live! In the Air Age is an impressive testament to one of prog rock's more interesting bands. Bandleader Bill Nelson is better known for his solo work of the '80s and on, but prior to that he was a burgeoning guitar hero with a blazing style and a talented bunch of players backing him up. Live! In the Air Age touches on a variety of concert highlights, including the sarcastic "Fair Exchange," the leisurely "Adventures in a Yorkshire Landscape," and the monolithic instrumental version of "Shine," which was originally a much shorter and far less monolithic B-side. The version of "Shine" included here, however (and originally one side of the vinyl 12"), allows Nelson to enjoy a guitar workout that leans toward something other than rock. Overall, an extremely enjoyable live album that never feels like a rehash of the studio material. [The 2004 edition includes bonus tracks.] ~ Steven E. McDonald
Following a long American tour, the band decided to record some of their UK concerts so took a Recording studio on the road and ended up with the live album "Live! In The Air Age". The album was originally released on double white vinyl, with one record being the LP and the other a 12” EP. The album includes a number of concert highlights such as the sarcastic Fair Exchange, the leisurely Adventures in a Yorkshire Landscape, and the monolithic instrumental version of "Shine", which was originally a much shorter and far less monolithic B-side.

Live! In The Air Age
$9.45 When Be Bop Deluxe's first album was released during the glam-rock wave in 1974, and the band (then comprising Bill Nelson and Ian Parkin on guitars, Robert Bryan on bass, and Nicholas Chatterton-Dew on drums) turned up on the back of the record cover in heavy makeup, it was viewed as being in the David Bowie mold, which certainly took in Nelson's thin but confident tenor vocals and the uptempo rock approach, and even ballads like "Adventures In A Yorkshire Landscape" that sounded a ...

Live! In The Air Age
$22.79 Notes from Michael Welch: “Untitled Improvisation”-Derek Bailey & Michael Welch- (2 compact disk) I had the great opportunity to record these tracks with Derek Bailey in 1999 at two concert events. As musicians know Derek was one of a kind. We miss him very much. When Derek ok’d the release of these tracks for my label I began the process to master the music for compact disc. Derek was very easy to please as he had seen so much of his material on various labels. When I ask him what to call the project he told me he ran out of names for record titles in 1976. That was his sense of humor. Though I know he cared about the recorded sound of each cd, he also relinquished much of the technical duties. When the initial pressings and artwork were available, he quickly approved. After a limited release we both soon discovered that the disc was very low in decibels and people (listeners) complained. If you have read Derek’s book you will understand much of his thought towards the recording medium. The music we performed has a broad dynamic range. In technical terms it varies from -60db below to the point of +db. Within Derek’s guitar technique and performance there are moments when he would completely have his amplifier volume (via foot pedal) on zero, completely off. He used only the sound of his hollow body electric guitar. I loved it, understood it and reacted to those dynamics. In a live performance he was the master of dynamics. Unfortunately, it is very hard to translate to audio disc. After years of mastering and remastering I was never happy with the sound. Unless you listened with headphones in a silent environment you could not appreciate or hear each note. Again in Derek’s book he speaks about compressors, limiters and all of those effects that change the original sound of the recorded music. I tried several different audio processors and used various mastering techniques to keep these tracks audible without compression and limiting. Without going into all of the technical mumbo-jumbo I’m as happy now with these tracks as I’ll ever be. (for now anyway) I still recommend headphones but the levels are way-way-up from the original master tapes. From these two concert performances there are solos and duets from Derek and myself. I believe these to be very unique. Derek’s solo’s are beautiful. For both concerts Derek had me open each event with drumset. Both of my solo performances are on the disc. You can hear a difference in the acoustics from each venue. The Miami venue was very dry while the Orlando hall was more reverberant. ...
