Reunion shows by bands with a major creative legacy are always a problematic matter, and when Morrissey persuaded the surviving members of the New York Dolls to play a set at the 2004 Meltdown Festival in London (which he curated), lots of fans wondered aloud if David Johansen, Sylvain Sylvain and Arthur Kane had any real business calling this band the Dolls without the presence of deceased guitar hero Johnny Thunders (and to a lesser extent, without similarly absent drummer Jerry Nolan). Of course, audience sentiment is a fickle thing, and since the Meltdown gig turned out to be one of the last public appearances for Arthur Kane -- who, with typical bad luck, died due to undiagnosed leukemia a few weeks after the show preserved on this album -- this recording now stands as a tribute to the fallen bassist, who desperately wanted a gig like this to happen many years before it finally became a reality. So it's appropriate that while this doesn't quite sound like the New York Dolls, it does sound like the best Dolls tribute band you could ever ask for. While Sylvain and Kane doubtless added a lot in terms of vibe and esprit de corps, what really makes the difference sonically is Johansen; since he became a solo artist, he's displayed a certain ennui towards the Dolls' legacy, occasionally visiting their songs out of seeming obligation rather than enthusiasm, but here he sings his old songbook ...

I did it right this time. I got a killer album with great songs, wonderful arrangements, amazing players, the best producer and hey, it's all me. I'd love this album even if I hadn't done it.I was going to get the professionally done bio and all my usual glowing quotes together for this and be very organized. But you know what, I think I just want to talk to you and tell you what's what.At this date, June 12, 2001 this album has been out exactly one month to the day. I've had some great responses and the other people have no taste. I've decided in my artistic life that I will always tell the truth...through my eyes of course...and that when you play this CD you will be going on a wonderful ride which you'll want to take over and over again. Like the title track says,"Don't know what I'm running from, don't know what I'm running to, all I know is running feels like the right thing to do."So, what do we all really want to do in our lives? Succeed, make lots of money...Naw...we just want to sit on the couch, eat greasy food, watch a shallow video and concentrate on doing absolutely nothing like track #2, "Doing Nothing."Fantasy VS.Reality. My choice? Fantasy always. You first see somebody and you have this giant crush on them and you haven't even met them. So you weave all these wonderful fantasies around them and....hey...sometimes that's the bestpart of the relationship right? Like the song says, "What The Hell It's My Dream."Dysfunctional? Hey we've got dysfunctional. Check out "Quick and Dirty". You see that it's destructive but you love the crazy one just the same. Do you stay or do you leave? You listen, you decide.Pure, wistful love,like the kind you read about. It could happen to you... "Once Upon A Time".I have a very annoying habit of always picking the wrong guy. If you can relate then maybe you've got a "Stack Of Disasters" too!But let's face it. The bottom line is that you can engage anyone in a great conversation and have them really think you're cool if you pick the right topic. Is it sports?
