| | Loreena McKennitt Parallel Dreams CD Loreena McKennitt Discography of CDs
Parallel Dreams, the Canadian harpist/songwriter's quietly moving sophomore release, finds the mystical red-haired siren in true balladeer form. By far McKennitt's most romantic venture -- the liner notes describe the project's central theme as a "yearning toward love, liberty and integration" -- Dreams is more ambitious than her sparse, impeccably recorded debut, Elemental, tripling the amount of players and laying the groundwork for the immense scope she would go on to attain on future recordings. The heartbreaking trio of "Standing Stones," "Annachnie Gordon," and "Dickens' Dublin" -- the latter features an effective radio-show sample of an unnamed Irish school child detailing the birth of Christ -- stand among the artist's finest works, and the range and clarity of her voice is undeniably powerful. Parallel Dreams was an emotional and career-turning point for McKennitt, as her next recording would be the major-label spectacle The Visit. ~ James Christopher Monger

| | Songs From A Secret Garden CD (1996)
Parallel Dreams music CDs
$10.69 Even if you've never heard the music of Secret Garden, you've probably seen the film, or rather, the countless films that tell tales of passion and unrequited love. Secret Garden's soaring violins and elegantly spare piano work make their songs ideal for wedding ceremonies, but that isn't to diminish the group's potency.
On SONGS FROM A SECRET GARDEN, composer-pianist Rolf Lovland and violinist Fionnuala Sherry draw liberally, and often simultaneously, from their Norwegian and Irish backgrounds, whether on the spirited "The Rap," the delicately framed "Papillon," or the elegiac "Chaconne."
RTE Concert Orchestra includes: John Tate (conductor).

Parallel Dreams CD music
$15.05 Since their inception in 1986, They Might Be Giants have been on a mission: to eradicate the self-important, angst-filled, navel-gazing aspects of rock music, and to remind us not to take things quite so seriously. The band pioneered a particular brand of nutty humor fleshed out with quirky, catchy pop-rock that has inspired a whole generation of musicians to write songs that don't necessarily mean anything, and to perform them with a breezy, it's-just-music attitude. Who can resist a song called "Doctor Worm," (one of the few new studio recordings on this mostly live album of mostly old favorites), which asserts "I'm interested in things/I'm not a real doctor, but I am a real worm/I am an actual worm/I live like a worm/I like to play the drums."

| | Milburn Well Well Well CD (2006) Import
Parallel Dreams music CDs
$29.09 The similarities between Milburn and fellow Sheffielders the Arctic Monkeys are immediately apparent from the opening notes, and never does this strong correlation relent throughout the rest of Milburn's first record. Truthfully, Milburn are largely the victims of circumstance: the quartet's first EP was released in 2002, long before the Arctic Monkeys made their dramatic and garish entrance onto the U.K. indie scene. Milburn's debut took too long to come out; the general public had already been inundated with Monkey Mania 2006 and were ready to move on to the next group by the time Well Well Well made its modest entry. Thus, their competent debut remained a mere footnote while their good friends fronted the crest of a new wave of British music. The same style of British-inflected pop/rock is present here, although Milburn tend to allow their songs to develop gradually, in contrast to the Monkeys' desire to perform at breakneck speeds. It allows for easier listening, and the relaxed atmosphere of "What About Next Time?" indicates a group very much capable of creating catchy tunes on par with the upper echelon of Brit-pop's offerings. The songs are still short in length, often cramming three refrains, two verses, and a bridge in slightly over two minutes, yet the rhythm section of Joe Carnall (bass) and Joe Green (drums) is methodical in approach and keeps the pace loose and sunny. On "Storm in a Teacup," the band shows a more ska-inspired approach, especially in the bouncy rhythms and jangly guitar riff. As capable as they are, and as a frontman Carnall is charismatic and punchy in his Yorkshire-accented vocals, rarely do Milburn sound assured enough in their style to take risks. "Cheshire Cat Smile" and "Stockholm Syndrome" are perfect examples of how ...
