By the early 1970s, British folk-rockers Pentangle had passed their peak of popularity, but 1971's REFLECTION was nevertheless an unqualified artistic success. Bassist Danny Thompson and drummer Terry Cox (one of the finest rhythm sections in England) were at their propulsive best with their trademark mix of folk deftness, rock muscle, and jazzy swing. Jacqui McShee's clear, striking vocals are as powerful as ever, as is the guitar interplay of John Renbourn and Bert Jansch. Touches like the sitar on "Rain and Snow" and the gospel inflection of "Will the Circle Be Unbroken" expand the Pentangle vocabulary while maintaining their classic style. Unfortunately, the band's initial lineup would only last for one more album following REFLECTION.

KALEIDOSCOPE WORLD, The Chills' 18-track compilation culled from The Chills early and mid-'80s EPs and singles, is highlighted by the song "Pink Frost."
The Chills' Martin Phillipps mixes up melodic pop with elements of garage rock and punk, creating songs with a sweet melancholy all their own. Phillipps has always been the focus of the Chills, writing and singing the band's songs. His group has also rivaled Menudo in its sheer number of personnel changes. In a just world, the Chills would have sold just as many records.
KALEIDOSCOPE WORLD showcases the shifting line-ups and many moods of the early to mid-'80s Chills. "Rolling Moon" captures a mood of shambling joy, its simple, repeated keyboard riff sounding like a distant caravan crossing New Zealand's big-sky country. Donovan's last truly great album of the 1960s, 1968's BARABAJAGAL shows interesting artistic growth at least as marked as his transformation from folk troubadour to daffy hippie-pop guru. The title track and "Trudi" feature the Rod Stewart-era Jeff Beck Group as Donovan's backing band; consequently both these songs have a surprising amount of sonic heft to them.
Of course, Donovan is pretty much incapable of getting heavy, but the hard-candy pop suits him well. A version of Terry Reid's marijuana/fellatio multiple-entendre "Superlungs My Supergirl" is similarly rockin', but for most of the rest of the album, Donovan reverts to his usual folkish psych-pop. The hit "Atlantis," the Cat Stevens-like "I Love My Shirt" and the unexpectedly tender "To Susan On the West Coast Waiting" are also highlights.
Donovan was in a tremendously creative phase during the latter part of 1968, owing to both a tour of the United States (which yielded a live album) and the chemical and social stimulation of his surroundings. If ever there was an album that should be packaged with a syringe full of insulin, it's HURDY GURDY MAN. However, therein lies the album's considerable charm.
Possibly the most refined examples of Donovan's special brand of imp-like psychedelic pop, these songs, including the hit title track and the superlative "Jennifer Juniper," are as wide-eyed and giggly as Syd Barrett-era Pink Floyd, minus all the creepiness. Which of course in some ways makes them that much creepier. The lesser-known tracks, like "Get Thy Bearings" and "Entertaining of a Shy Girl," are if anything even more entertainingly wispy and spacey. Good stuff, especially for fans of British psychedelia.

The first solo album from Fleetwood Mac singer/songwriter Daniel David Kirwan has the future producer for Human League and Buzzcocks, Martin Rushent, utilizing those skills here, as well as engineering. The sound is crystal clear, and a feather in the cap for Rushent as well as Kirwan. It starts off with an uncharacteristic "Ram Jam City," which has more Lindsey Buckingham sounds than one would expect, especially since the two guitarists come from two different musical worlds. "Odds and Ends" is more lighthearted, the kind of music Paul McCartney toyed with on The White Album's "Rocky Raccoon." What Second Chapter immediately sets forth is the importance of Kirwan as a pop artist, and how, despite Fleetwood Mac's success after he left, his sounds could still have been beneficial to that supergroup.
