While there's a definite whiff of the tourist market about this, there's no denying the superb playing on the pieces, many of which will be at least vaguely familiar to many ears. However, while the liner notes give no indication, the CD sounds like the work of two bands. The opening "Sabre Dance" is accordion and xylophone, while the rest is certainly the Balalaika Ensemble in all their glory, showing their mastery on classics like "Evening in Moscow," "Guelder Rose," and the balladic "The Lonely Bell Is Ringing." The bayan (or Russian accordion) player S. Garanin is a standout, not only offering a chordal bed for the strings, but plenty of virtuoso flourishes himself. The Cross Timbers band plays a unique blend of traditional bluegrass, as well as red dirt country, blues, and folk music. Formed in the spring of 2005, they saw a need in their church for a band that played a more traditional gospel/bluegrass style of music. One thing let to another, and Cross Timbers began to get requests to play outside of the church setting, at bluegrass festivals, family reunions, civic events, and even wedding receptions. Cross Timbers was recently the feature band at the Oklahoma Bluegrass Club’s monthly concert.In the winter of 2005, Cross Timbers recorded their first CD “Rough Cut”, which was followed up in 2007 with their newest project “Don’t Play No Slow Songs!” Vocalist Terri Vogt provides the strong female voice in their music.
