| Collection Music Review Average Rating: (4 out of 5 stars) Essential! That´s amazing! This album shows how much this woman can touch a human heart! Submitted by diva.orgiastic (Rio,Brazil) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Valerie!! If you enjoy Ashford and Simpson, then you will enjoy these out of print albums. Valerie showcases the songwriting and strong vocal ability that would make up one half of Ashford and Simpson. These albums hint of what was to come!! "Silly Wasn't I" That song should have been longer than two minutes! Valerie was/is a genius! Thank goodness this compact disc came out. I just a bout broke my neck trying to get it! Every song shows her talent. This is a must have CD! Submitted by Russ in Cali (Atascadero, Calif, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Silly wasn't Motown!!! Silly of them for not promoting Valerie and these 2 fabulous early 70's albums!!! What a talent she is! She posseses such a strong, versatile, and distinctive voice, and the girl can play the mess out of a piano!!! She really worked those Funk Bros. too! The tracks from this CD really sets a tone for you. I've always loved her and Nick Ashoford's songwriting and this CD is a strong example of their 2 cents at Motown! Although the booklet doesn't state who remastered this or if it was remeastered, but you can tell something was done in the audio restoration department! Motown is doing the damn thing with these re-releases both in the US (with the help of Hip-O Select), and overseas in the UK!!! A real Motown fan would order these imports to fill in the gaps from both sides of the pond, so don't let this one go!!! NOTE: All but 4 tracks have been released on CD in the US back in 1991 as "The Best Of Valerie Simpson". This, however, is a 2fer of her 2 COMPLETE albums!!! A must have!!! Valerie At Last It's really great, to once again, have Valerie's music at hand. Motown had a collection out in the late 80's of her music but for the longest time her music has been lost.
"Love Woke Me Up This Morning", "Sinner Man", "Now That There's You", "Drink The Wine" are all my favourites from this new collection. This early 70's collection shows what a talent Motown had singing wise. I believe that Valerie was overlooked as a singer as were a lot of the other Motown artists who should have been bigger stars that they were.
Valerie was known more as a Motown staff writer than a singer.
Valerie & Nick went on to become huge stars in the 80's, with "Solid".
This is a must for all Motown collectors. Valerie Simpson is a part of the Motown Story as a singer.

Collection album
$6.39 This audio document of The Corrs' Dublin homecoming concert has pretty much everything fans of Irish pop could wish for, including an appearance from Bono in his earthly incarnation, fresh from an audience with President George W. Bush. It's to the band's credit that the charismatic singer fails to steal the show, despite creditable efforts via an anthemized version of Ryan Adams' beautifully downtempo "When the Stars Go Blue," and a great, leering rendition of Lee Hazlewood and Nancy Sinatra's "Summer Wine."

| | Johnny Otis 1945-1947 CD (2002)
Collection CD music
$18.05 Growing up among Afro-Americans in Berkeley, CA, Greek-American Johnny Otis (born John Veliotes) always identified strongly with people of color. Before he had attained the age of 20 he was gigging with black jazz bands throughout the Southwest, and eventually organized an ensemble deliberately patterned after Count Basie's orchestra. This highly charged album of historical musical artifacts documents the very beginning of Johnny Otis' recording career. With one apparently unobtainable exception, the Classics Blues & Rhythm Series has assembled all of Otis' Excelsior recordings, made in Los Angeles between 1945 and 1947. This provides background and context for his more well-known Savoy material, and indeed for everything this amazing person accomplished during the second half of the 20th century. Otis' first act as a recording bandleader was to borrow Jimmy ...
| | J J Jackson But It's Alright CD (1967)
Collection music CDs
$9.95 Soul belter J.J. Jackson is best known for his 1967 smash, "But It's Alright," but he has some fine singles and a couple of excellent albums as well, and 1967's But It's Alright on the Calla label is one of them. Kicking off with the infectious title track, the record alternates between flat-out rockers like "I Dig Girls," "Come See Me (I'm Your Man)" (which was written by Jackson, covered by the Pretty Things, and then reclaimed powerfully here), and "Boogaloo Baby," midtempo groovers like "You've Got Me Dizzy" and "The Stones That I Throw," and ballads like "Try Me" and a righteous "A Change Is Gonna Come." Jackson's live-wire voice and boundless energy put the songs across and the band kicks up quite a storm as well. The only times Jackson stumbles are when he takes on Lou Rawls' "Love Is a Hurting Thing" and ...

| | Don Cherry Eternal Rhythm CD (1968) Japan
Collection music CDs
$29.35 Eternal Rhythm is a masterpiece on several levels. It was one of the earliest major examples of the idea that it was possible for any and all musical cultures to exist simultaneously, a philosophy that rejected any innate musical hierarchy and had no trouble placing the earthiest blues alongside the most delicate gamelan. It was also a summit meeting between representatives of the American and European jazz avant-garde, black and white, dismissing as meaningless both the cautious attitude of American jazz musicians toward Europeans edging onto their turf and the tentative stance of Europeans playing a music that was not "theirs." More importantly, Eternal Rhythm exists as an utterly spectacular, movingly beautiful musical performance, one of the rare occasions where the listener has a visceral sense of borders falling and vast expanses of territory being revealed for the first time. Cherry balanced compositional clarity, wild free improvisation, and a totally inclusive musical consciousness in a manner seldom achieved, ...
