| | My Life W / Thrill Kill Kult Diamonds & Daggerz CD My Life W / Thrill Kill Kult Discography of CDs
Diamonds & Daggerz is a remix album from My Life With the Thrill Kill Kult, released in conjunction with Ryko's TKK best-of and reissues of their early work. Rather than revisiting actual songs, Buzz McCoy, Groovie Mann, and their cast of characters chose to mesh Thrill Kill snippets, movie dialogue drop-ins, and their own vocal samples with crackling electro-disco beats. The result is a seamless flow that's similar in mood to Thrill Kill Kult but less satisfying, since its concentration on beats lessens the camp factor. It was camp, after all, that always saved TKK when their songwriting faltered, and Diamonds & Daggerz -- on a purely musical level -- is only comparable to an average lounge compilation. Still, it's the familiar subject matter that's the draw here, made clear by Diamonds' grindhouse-inspired artwork. "Take me higher," says the girl in "Devil Rider"; "Sex Whip" offers sultry beats straight out of a '60s exploitation film. Other highlights include the aggressive house beats of "Young Tongue," as well as the eight-minute-plus finale, "Dope Kult." Diamonds & Daggerz won't offer much for the Thrill Kill Kult uninitiated. But for completists or their followers, it's an effective late-night soundtrack. ~ Johnny Loftus

Diamonds & Daggerz
$9.65 A forgotten man in the rise of West Coast rap, Tone-Loc was effectively cut off from his hometown scene in Los Angeles by his unexpected pop success. Paced by the singles "Wild Thing" and "Funky Cold Medina" -- both co-written by a pre-fame Young MC, and some of the earliest productions by the legendary Dust Brothers -- Loc's debut album, Loc-ed After Dark, became the second rap album to top the pop charts, following the Beastie Boys' Licensed to ...

$7.15 | | Shadows Complete Singles A's & B'S 1959-1980: 21 Years At The Top CD (2004)
Diamonds & Daggerz
$9.79 This greatest-hits compilation has 20 tracks from British Rock band the Shadows (also known as Cliff Richard's former backup band).
This exclusive Australian CD includes the hits "Black is Black," "San Francisco," and "Good Vibrations."
This CD reissue of a 1987 release finds England's number one instrumental group tackling a batch of old standards in their typical style. Tunes like "Black Is Black," "Stardust," "Ghost Riders in the Sky," "In the Mood," "The Lonely Bull," and "Good Vibrations" get the typical Shadows touch, and the inclusion of old favorites like "Nivram" (lead guitarist's Hank Marvin last name spelled backwards), "Quartermaster's Stores," and "Sacha" (a number one hit in Australia for Marvin as a solo act in 1970) make this a worthy companion to any greatest hits package you might already have on the band. Instrumental fans take note; this one's a good one! ~ Cub Koda
The Shadows only really dominated British pop and rock music for about five years, from late 1958 through 1963, but they've held on to their audience for decades, partly owing to the consistency of their work, especially their singles. This 86-track collection, running 240 minutes, assembles the group's complete singles output from 21 of those years -- and not surprisingly, it's not only pretty good (and sometimes excellent) rock & roll, but also a reflection of some key aspects of British pop/rock and pop culture, and, apart from some early missteps and some late-era predictability, very good listening. The first two songs, "Feelin' Fine" and "Don't Be a Fool (With Love)," cut when the group was still known as the Drifters, are the most unusual tracks here, as they're vocal numbers, recorded before the band recognized that their success apart from lead singer Cliff Richard lay primarily in their instrumental prowess. "Feelin' Fine" is a highly derivative number that sounds like an imitation of Buddy Holly, while "Don't Be a Fool (With Love)" is heavily influenced by doo wop music, and sounds like a good imitation of Dion & the Belmonts or Danny & the ...

| | Good Shoes Think Before You Speak CD (2007)
Diamonds & Daggerz
$10.09 On their singles and EPs, Good Shoes seemed like the scrappy kid brothers of similarly bouncy, angular bands like Maxïmo Park and the Futureheads, but on their debut album, the Shoes come into their own: Think Before You Speak is a set of cheeky, vulnerable songs with all the sugar-rush immediacy, and addictiveness, of a crush. The band's singles still exemplify their economic yet jam-packed style. "All in My Head" pairs giddy riffs and a breathless melody with self-aggrandizing and self-deprecating lyrics about doing nothing; on the fantastic "Never Meant to Hurt You," Rhys Jones sings "you never knew that I didn't love you" with such a light touch that it just sounds honest instead of cruel. Think Before You Speak boasts production that's cleaner than Good Shoes' earlier releases, but the more polished sound gives their sprightly music the fullness it needs to make a bigger impact, especially on spring-loaded songs like "Nazanin" and "We Are Not the Same," where riffs and melodies pop up in all directions, chase each other, and occasionally fall into lock-step. The band tries for a ballad with the lovely "Blue Eyes," but gets carried away; "Sophia" goes for a slyer and sadder approach, mixing vignettes of going out to shows with ...
