The long-awaited follow-up to the earlier Thai Elephant Orchestra album, Elephonic Rhapsodies takes much of the same basic idea, but adds experience and mastery to the proceedings, along with a bit of studio work. The original plan was along the lines of a dance mix of the more avant-garde sounds of the orchestra. Instead, new instruments were added, more elephants were brought in, and they tried new techniques on their various instruments. Only a bit of studio influence can be heard, mostly in basic cleaning on the sounds, and a couple of isolated loops of the elephants' calls. The sound is thoroughly different from the previous album in many ways, more sophisticated perhaps, but also more exploratory (how else would one top the first album of elephant orchestral music, after all?). Pick it up as a continuation of the idea of collaborative inter-species music, or perhaps as an enjoyable listen in its own, aesthetic, right. Where else can you hear a junior-high marching band collaborate with a troupe of elephants on Beethoven? ~ Adam Greenberg
The long-awaited second offering of elephants in the Thai jungle playing specially designed musical instruments. The Thai Elephant Orchestra was co-founded by Richard Lair of the Thai Elephant Conservation Center in Lampang and performer/composer Dave Soldier. This CD is more tailored for children than the first, and explores the far reaches of what the ellies now perform, including lots of traditional Thai music, and even Beethoven (the Pastorale Symphony) and Hank Williams (Kaw-liga). Guest appearances by dance composer David First, cellist Jamie Seiber, pin pia player Smithitham, bamoolin player Muangling, saxophone sensation Matusuda Madoka and more. But still lots and lots of pure elephant music with almost no editing or studio tricks sure to please their fans.

$14.89 This is the real desert blues, played by Tuareg tribesmen who live it every day, making their home on the edge of the Sahara desert in Mali. Born in Libyan refugee camps after severe drought blighted the region, it's authentic, spare, and haunting, its rhythms echoing the miles of space and the languid pace of their desert surroundings. Played mostly on guitars -- there are six guitarists in the band -- with vocals, some female backing vocals, and touches of percussion, and recorded at Radio Tisdas studios (hence the title) in Kidal, capital of the stark Iforas region, with the facility only available between 7 p.m. and ...

Elephonic Rhapsodies songs
$14.55 Harmony Rockets are a Mercury Rev side project. PARALYZED MIND OF THE ARCHANGEL VOID consists of a single, 41-minute, improvised track.
Comprised of a single 42-minute live performance piece, the brain-searing Paralyzed Mind of the Archangel Void is a trip into the furthest reaches of sound, a complete immersion into space noise and melodic chaos. The Harmony Rockets guise allows Mercury Rev the opportunity to push their music to its breaking point; instead of the ear-splitting avant freakout one might have expected, however, the disc seems to exist in slow motion, characterized by ominous waves of sound. Guitars drone, trumpets throb, and Jonathan Donahue's vocals float in and out of the mix like random messages intercepted from another galaxy; the cumulative effect is an amazing distortion of the time-space continuum, a shape-shifting aural world almost alien in its dementia. ~ Jason Ankeny
A classic experimental album of epic proportions, "Paralyzed Mind of the Archangel Void" consists of ONE track, which runs to 41:40 minutes, recorded live at the Rhinecliff Hotel in upstate New York in 1995. It was initially released in 1995 as a limited edition of 500 copies, available in Germany, France, Benelux, Scandinavia. It was then given a limited re-release on CD in October 1997 in the UK and Eire. It also turned up on Big Cat in the States in '95, was kinda lost and unavailable for a while, and then resurfaced in '98 when it was re-released by V2. 10 years later, this seminal live recording is once again available on Mercury Rev's own imprint, Excelsior Melodies. On the album, the band freed themselves from the constraints of the standard rock form and produced a work that reflects their interest in avant-garde and improvised music. It contains echoes of German experimentalists like Faust and Guru Guru, as well as of Sun Ra and the early electronic explorations of Morton Subotnik. Starts out sweetly enough, then builds and builds, until finally arriving at a sublime conclusion. It's been noted that the lyrics were basically lifted from an old blues (?) number. Said Jonathan: "It's mostly instrumental, but there's some vocals on the beginning of it, it's me singing. Basically, what it is, is most of Mercury Rev, that you see up there [stage], were trying to kill a Friday night ...
