Is anyone else under the impression that Leo Feigin replaced Ivo Perelman with Wally Shoup in his roster? Both saxophonists display the same kind of vital energy verging on the unbearably direct, and both have lined up album after album for Leo Records -- Perelman in the '90s, Shoup well on his way to do the same in the 2000s. Confluxus is significantly different than the two Wally Shoup Trio recordings between which it is sandwiched. The music is less ecstatic, more nuanced, with moments of near-silent tension and a slightly more romantic form of lyricism than what Shoup has gotten us used to. Drummer Toshi Makihara was part of the album Hurricane Floyd (with Thurston Moore), and cellist Brent Arnold is a regular member of the saxophonist's main outfit Project W. So, going into this live radio session (for Jack Straw's Sonarchy Radio show in Seattle), all three of them were very much acquainted. The session takes the shape of a near-continuous 45-minute performance. It starts in the kind of high-energy free improv style you'd expect from Shoup, driven by walloping drumming and flurries of tongue-stabbed notes. The presence of the cello, instead of a bass, immediately opens up a dialogue between strings and brass, as illustrated by "Joyride." But after 20 minutes of soul-piercing playing, the trio settles down: Makihara's playing becomes fragmented, then breaks into bits and pieces, while Shoup and Arnold space out their interventions. "Secret Tear," "Luminage" and "Double Pump" get increasingly textural and sparse, without loosing a certain jazziness or becoming downright abstract. "Conversance" marks a return to high energy, only to see the group conclude with a tone poem, "Fault Line," as Shoup delivers haunting sax sobs over a cello drone. ~ François Couture

This is the third release on Leo Records by Wally Shoup, but this time he has a new line-up: his long time associates Toshi Makihara on drums and Brent Arnold on cello. It's "softer" music than Wally usually plays, and there are even hints of melodies --

Personnel: Wally Shoup (saxophone); Toshi Makihara (drums); Brent Arnold (cello).

Liner Note Author: Tom Djll.

Only Everything, David Sanborn's second album for Decca, feels like part two of his debut for the label, 2008's Here & Gone. That set was a tribute to Ray Charles and Hank Crawford -- the alto saxophonist who played with Charles in the '50s and early '60s, and influenced Sanborn tremendously. That set featured loads of vocals and tightly arranged tunes that were indicative of the performances ...

The crown jewel of the epic Evans/Davis triptych that began with MILES AHEAD and PORGY AND BESS, SKETCHES OF SPAIN is as emotionally compelling as any performance in the trumpeter's remarkable body of works. Combining as it does the emotional gravity of two cultures--the deep song of flamenco music and the rich lament of the blues--SKETCHES OF SPAIN is a musical hybrid of enormous power and beauty. Gil Evans' immense canvas of orchestral colors inspires some of Davis' most deeply felt solo flights. He paints vast vistas of velvety, shimmering night sounds, and through ...

Recorded between 1961 & 2001. Includes liner notes by Joel Selvin. Given the overwhelming number of Glen Campbell collections released over the years, it comes as a shock to realize that Capitol's 2003 set The Legacy (1961-2002) is the first-ever Campbell box set to be released. There have been plenty of single- and double-disc collections, and while some of them been been excellent, even essential, they also point out one undeniable fact: it's much harder to assemble a good Campbell collection than it appears. Part of the problem is that there is a certain group of hits -- "Galveston," "Wichita Lineman," "By the Time I Get to Phoenix," "Rhinestone Cowboy," "Southern Nights" -- that have to be on any hits collection, a large group that nevertheless leaves sizable room to wiggle and add other hits, singles, or album tracks according to the needs of the compilation. Of course, matters are complicated by the fact that he recorded a lot between the mid-'60s and mid-'70s, much of it being released, some of it being shelved or leaked on B-sides and rush-released compilations, and none of it being particularly well documented (one track on The Legacy, a duet with Bobbie Gentry on "All I Have to Do Is Dream," is given the credit of "1970 single; LP unknown"). To complicate matters further, this prolific hitmaker -- who had Top Ten country hits from 1968 to 1989 --often did some of his best work on songs that weren't hits. Compilers have dealt with this situation by filling the space around the five big hits by choosing tracks seemingly at random -- and this doesn't just apply to budget-line collections, it's also true of Capitol's releases, such as the bewildering 2000 collection 20 Greatest Hits, which contained no big hits outside of the Big Five. Of all the Campbell collections, only three stood out from the pack: Razor & Tie's 1997 double-disc compilation The Glen Campbell Collection, the first CD-era attempt to take stock of his entire hitmaking career; EMI's 1999 double-disc collection The Capitol Years: 1965-1977, ...
