Jim (Leonardo DiCaprio) and his friends roam the streets of New York City as goof-offs, petty thieves, and junkies. Expelled from school for using drugs before a game, Jim is also thrown out of his house and takes up street hustling. A pre-superstardom DiCaprio gives a strong performance in this gritty and uncompromising look at being young and streetwise. Excerpts of Jim Carroll's book "The Basketball Diaries" first appeared in "The Paris Review" in 1970. The book was published in 1978.
Jim Carroll's song "People Who Died" was a New Wave hit in the early 1980s.
Rated BBFC 18 by the British Board of Film Classification.

The BasketBall Diaries is one of my favorit movies of the young hihschool ganster who gets addicted to drugs. Leodicaprio plays such a good role in it.

I first saw Basketball Diaries when i was 12 (now 22) and the movie made such an impact on my life! Leonardo DiCaprio does an outstanding job! His crying seen near the end of the movie was so real that to this day i still get teary eyed watching it! GREAT MOVIE!!!

Remarkable actor
Because of his heartthrob status and famous biography, it's easy to lose track of the fact that DiCaprio is one of the most disciplined young actors to come along in years.
His performance in this tough film is remarkable for one as young as he was when he played the role. In his career he's nearly always understated his characters -- they never chew up the scenary. He obviously thinks through them and finds ways to express their uniqueness. Even when the role is written to be over the top (as when he played the wildly difficult part of Rimbaud in "Eclipse", possibly his greatest accomplishment so far) he retains his humanity and believability, his technique is under control and the effects he goes for seem to be created without effort.
The result is that audiences often leave surprised by the power of his films. He is truly a phenomenon.

I just saw this movie for the first time...finally. After years of hearing about it, I feel it was awarded all the recognition and then some! I love Leo in this and Mark Wahlberg! Excellent portrayal of best friends, loyalty and drug use. A must see movie!!

Actor Mickey Jones (TV's Home Improvement, TIN CUP), was a renowned drummer in the 1960s, playing with Trini Lopez and Johnny Rivers. 1966, however, saw him travelling the world with Bob Dylan and The Band on their legendary tour (documented on Dylan's recording LIVE 1966), which saw Dylan making his controversial transition from acoustic guitar to electric. While on the road, he took a good deal of 8mm color home movie footage, which was lost for many years. Here, that footage is made available for the first time, presenting an intimate look at Dylan both on stage and behind the scenes. Sex, love, lies, bed-hopping and mistaken identities abound in this pop musical-comedy set in Madrid. The gorgeous Paula (Natalia Verbeke) breaks up with perpetually glum Pedro (Guillermo Toledo) in order to take her affair with Javier (Ernesto Alterio) to the next level. The immature Javier however, is unwilling to break up with Sonia (SEX Y LUCIA star Paz Vega) or confess their affair to Pedro, who happens to be his best friend.
