Sempre Libera Customer Reviews
||Yes, good stuff, but compare Natalie Dessay|
OK, Gramophone had a recent issue that portrayed Anna Netrebko and Angela Gheorghiu as the two competing soprano divas of our time, and of course even those at Gramophone who came up with the idea know that that is kind of a publicity stunt that leaves several other sopranos of equal or even better quality and prominence out of the picture. OK, I'm not going to say anything directly against Netrebko, and her latest album is definitely a classic, but as far as the present album is concerned, one need simply compare the "Italian Opera Arias" album by Natalie Dessay, which shares quite a bit of material with Sempre Libera, to see instantly whether Anna or Natalie is the more powerful and moving singer. Of course, Natalie does not quite have the sexy appearance of Netrebko, which means that when the visual element is also important, Netrebko might win out some of the time, but singers who are not beauty-pageant winners definitely "try harder", and that is certainly true of Natalie, who is famous not only for her acting, but for the total commitment of her soul that she gives to every one of her performances. Buy Natalie's album instead of this one, and you won't be disappointed.

Anna Netrebko's second CD is even more impressive than her first. Much of the fine effect of this recital is due to Claudio Abbado's leadership--he's infinitely sensitive not only to the music but also to his soprano's strengths. And the Mahler Chamber Orchestra is a fine group, its wind players mellow and plangent, its strings sweetly ideal for bel canto.
