| | Keith Emerson Vivacitas: Live At Glasgow 2002 CD Keith Emerson Discography of CDs
(3 Customer Reviews)
Although progressive rock reached its commercial peak in the '70s, it still enjoys an enthusiastic cult following -- and not all of its fans are over 40. These days, the prog rock experience ranges from the classic albums of Yes, ELP, Pink Floyd and King Crimson to all the younger prog rock bands that emerged in the '90s and early 2000s. Today's younger prog rock converts seem to welcome new bands as well as concerts by a veteran like keyboardist Keith Emerson, who is reunited with Brian Davison and Lee Jackson on Vivacitas. Emerson, of course, knew Davison and Jackson from the Nice, which was formed in 1967 and broke up in 1970 -- and this three-CD set finds the prog rock survivors performing a Nice reunion concert in Glasgow, Scotland in 2002. The first two CDs focus on the concert, while the third disc contains a 2001 interview with British journalist Chris Welch. Emerson, Davison and Jackson sound like they're really enjoying themselves in Glasgow, where they revisit "Hang on to a Dream," "Little Arabella," "She Belongs to Me" and other gems the Nice originally recorded in the late '60s. Emerson has long been a major jazz enthusiast, and part of the fun on Vivacitas is hearing the jazz-like quoting that sometimes takes place -- this 2002 edition of the Nice quotes everything from Miles Davis' "So What" and Dizzy Gillespie's "Manteca" to Johann Sebastian Bach. Although pleasing, Vivacitas falls shorts of essential; those with a more casual interest in the Nice should stick to their old 1967-1970 output. But hardcore fans will enjoy hearing Emerson and his compatriots reunited after all these years. ~ Alex Henderson

21st Century Nice The first Nice album I heard/owned was Five Bridges Suite, right around the time it came out in 1970. I loved it. I probably still have the vinyl LP packed away somewhere. I then went through the whole ELP stage...all the albums...going to 2-3 of their shows. I loved them. Then just now, in 2008 I run across this CD and figured I'd give it a try. It blew me away. Unlike many of my friends that still only listen to the 70's stuff they grew up with, I grew up with music as it changed, liking many of the 90's alternative bands with their heavier form of rock. To me this CD is a perfect blend of an old classic getting a fresh breath of air. Emerson is unmistakable of course and hasn't lost a beat. But what makes this CD for me is what the great guitar work does for the songs (the drumming isn't so bad either!). The edge it adds to these songs really brings them into the 21st century. 4 stars because I know it won't appeal to all Nice fans out there, but it's a 5 in my personal collection. the nice...? Having been a fan of The Nice since their inception many many years ago I eagerly anticipated this new cd... oh dear, what a dissapointment! It sounds like a poor parody of what was once really great & original music.... I know Emerson has often showed lapses of taste & sublety during his long & varied career but this has got to be the worst. Seriously once great tracks played with as much feeling as someone chopping up concrete. Truly dreadful & certainly painful to listen to, NOT NICE! This release was formerly titled: FEELIN' ALLRIGHT: THE VERY BEST OF TRAFFIC.
This well thought-out anthology includes just about every notable Traffic track from their peak years of 1968 to 1971. What immediately impresses here is the range of the band and the variety of their influences. They veer from psychedelic pop (love that cheesy sitar on their debut hit, "Paper ...

$14.65 This is a strange triple-CD compendium of Rick Wakeman's work, representing solo and group repertory from across his career. It isn't quite what it would lead one to think it was -- a compilation of his work from established recordings in his output; rather, it is apparently assembled from live performances, although there's no audience sound or talk between ...
