It may be hard to believe, but 2004's Greatest Hits is not only the first retrospective Neil Young has released since 1977's Decade, it's the first ever single-disc collection of his best-known songs. That's a span of 27 years separating the two collections, which is an awful long time to resist a Greatest Hits disc -- many of his peers succumbed, offering countless comps during those years -- and such a resistance to a compilation may not be much a surprise from the legendarily prickly Young, but what is a surprise is that 11 of the 16 songs on Greatest Hits were also on Decade. Of the five songs that were not on Decade, only two date from after the '70s -- 1989's "Rockin' in the Free World" and 1992's "Harvest Moon" -- while one of the remaining three (1970's "Only Love Can Break Your Heart") comes from the time chronicled on Decade; the other two, 1978's "Comes a Time" and 1979's "Hey Hey, My My (Into the Black)," arrived in the two years of the '70s not covered on the 1977 compilation. All this means is that Greatest Hits offers the basic canon, with no frills and none of Neil's trademark idiosyncrasy. Some may miss that cantankerous spirit, pointing out that this contains nothing from his towering twin masterpieces of dark introspection -- Tonight's the Night and On the Beach -- or that there's nothing from Buffalo Springfield (which was covered on Decade) and that noteworthy songs like "Powderfinger," "Cortez the Killer," "Lotta Love," and "Long May You Run" are missing. Ultimately, that doesn't matter much, because Greatest Hits has all the songs that every Neil Young fan, from the devoted to the casual listener, agrees are his biggest and best: "Down by the River," "Cinnamon Girl," "Helpless," "After the Gold Rush," "Southern Man," "Ohio," "The Needle and t Greatest Hits Music | List Price | $18.98 (You save $8.29) | | Category | Rock/Pop Albums, Rock CDs, Singer/Songwriter, Country Rock, Greatest Hits Collections | | Label | Reprise | | Orig Year | 2004 | | All Time Sales Rank | 893 | | CD Universe Part number | 6790257 | | Catalog number | 48935 | | Discs | 1 | | Release Date | Nov 16, 2004 | | Studio/Live | Studio | | Mono/Stereo | Stereo | | Producer | Neil Young; Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young; Henry Lewy; Elliot Mazer; Kendall Pacios; Volume Dealers; David Briggs; Niko Bolas; Tim Mulligan; Ben Keith; Neil Young; David Briggs; Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young; Henry Lewy | | Engineer | Henry Lewy; Harry Sitam; David Hewitt; David McKinley; Elliot Mazer; Henry Saskowski; David Briggs; John Nowland; Niko Bolas; Tim Mulligan; Bill Halverson | | Personnel | Ca, Hollywood, Nashville, Neil Young, Linda Ronstadt, Graham Nash, James Taylor, Linda Ronstadt, Chad Cromwell, TN, Steve Gibson, Farrell Morris, Ben Keith, Spooner Oldham, San Francisco, Nicolette Larson, Kenneth A. Neil Young Greatest Hits Songs Greatest Hits Music Review Average Rating: (4 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews Outstanding One Disc Anthology It's impossible to sum up Neil Young with One CD and this collection does not do that, yet for those seeking Great material/Sound and are casual Fans, this Cd can't be topped. It focuses on the Years 1969-71 when Young was Hot as a Pistol, adding the best of His post-HARVEST Tunes...in fact, the first 11 Songs date from 69-71, while the final 5 span a period of 17 years...I appreciate the compilers focus on the Best Stuff, avoiding the often-seen move of putting on, say, 2 songs from each CD release, and thereby getting a lot of filler...Buy this One, but don't throw away DECADE... greatest? I gotta tell ya, I don't even own this album although I got all the tunes on it and I've been Neil's fan for years and years, but it is IMPOSSIBLE to make a greatest hits package out of his career. It is LITERALLY MINDBOGGLING to tackle a project such as sequencing a Neil Young "best of"-I don't envy the poor guy who was given the task of sequencing this for a minute! This entire set is gold, but there's just so much missing which is easy to comprehend, you just can't fit 30 something albums onto one compact disc, that's a given. I don't blame Reprise for a minute for cashing in on a package like this, but I'm just stating my view on Neil's material...there is no equal to him, nowhere, you have to appreciate the full scope of each individual album if you are to truly get a grasp of what message he is trying to convey to the listener at any given stage in his career...I mean this guy is just a chameleon of sound it's unbelievable-for anyone who has never heard Neil Young at all before, I would sincerely recommend a few live sets from each stage in his career just to highlight each part if you're looking for your first intro to Neil Young-Massey Hall, Live Rust, Weld, Unplugged, this will give you a little bit of everything...but come on, you're gonna end up buying ALL of his albums eventually, that's a given if you become a true Neil fan, I gurantee it!! Entry Level Collection A good starter for those like me, who have never bought a Neil Young album before. The fan reactions were pretty obvious, as they are for Pink Floyd's "Echoes" etc. No-one is ever going to be completely happy. I'll also bet that half the "fans" that are complaining should have everything on there and probably didn't buy it anyway.
I think this album's done it's job in that, it's got Neil virgins like myself in and possibly made us want to investigate further. It is a greatest hits after all. If you need a starter album with songs that you're familiar with, this is it. Quality is excellent on all fronts.
I got the CD/DVD version and contrary to another review, the DVD is excellent. The sound quality is first rate DVD audio (only 2 channel unfortunately), remixed and remastered to perfection. There's not much to look at, that's true, but it's the audio that's important here. For audiophiles with DVDA capabilities, I'd highly recommend it. Beware the CD/DVD This is a very good collection. There is a CD/DVD version being marketed also but watch out. It is a two disk set but the DVD is nothing more than a screen saver. The video for each song simply displays a record player going around with LP vinyl on it. The CD/DVE version costs twice the price of the CD alone and you get absolutely nothing.
