Side Project Of Chino Moreno (Deftones Frontman)
Team Sleep: Chino Moreno (vocals, guitar); Todd Wilkinson (guitar, acoustic guitar, keyboards, bass guitar); Zach Hill (piano, drums); Rick Verrett (keyboards, bass guitar); DJ Crook (keyboards, programming, turntables). Additional personnel: Mary Timony, Rob Crow (vocals); Sonny Mayugba (guitar); Greg Wells (piano). Team Sleep's debut was in the works for a long time -- something like ten years. Head Deftone Chino Moreno used to do four-track stuff with high-school pal Todd Wilkinson, and those casual recordings essentially were the genesis for this self-titled set of modernized mood music. The indie rock and dream pop influences drifting throughout Team Sleep appear in Moreno's day job, too, but barring a few stretches here and there ("Blvd. Nights," the end of "Live from the Stage"), hardness and volume are left largely to the Deftones. In fact, besides Moreno's distinctive vocals, there's little connectivity to his other band. There doesn't need to be. Team Sleep is its own thing, a drifting fog of electronic and analog texture with a pool of interesting collaborators and the distinct feel of late-'80s/early-'90s alternative rock. (Team Sleep could probably do an awesome cover version of Catherine Wheel's "Black Metallic.") So, while "Your Skull Is Red" channels Slowdive and My Bloody Valentine underneath Moreno's plaintive wail, "Delorian" and "Staring at the Queen'" are instrumentals built from Wilkinson's spiny guitar leads and the ultramodern programming/turntablism of Crook. Pinback's Rob Crow contributes vocals on four songs, and while he's not as fervent as Moreno, he does give "Princeton Review" and "Ever Since WWI" an indie rock quality that works with their tense guitars. Mary Timony also guests, co-writing "Tomb of Liegia" with Wilkinson and Crook and matching her famously austere vocal to its chilly electronics and lingering piano figure. Her duet of sorts with Moreno on the beat-damaged "King Diamond" isn't as successful, but it's still a noble experiment on an album full of them. And though Team Sleep occasionally becomes too much of a mood album when its layering gets out of hand, it's a consistently interesting listen. ~ Johnny Loftus With 2005's TEAM SLEEP, Deftones frontman Chino Moreno made good on his promise to take time off from his main outfit to record a new project. Deftones fans may be surprised at the nature of the album, however. While TEAM SLEEP bears traces of the Deftones' dark intensity, and the record is full of expansive, sometimes roaring guitar, it is not a standard heavy-rock outing. Instead Moreno has created an album of moody, atmospheric music that includes electronic programming, fluid guitars, and dreamy, down-tempo compositions. In large part, the success of TEAM SLEEP can be attributed to a shifting cast of musicians, producers, and mixers. The crossfire of Moreno's impassioned vocals with guitars, bass, drums, turntables, and keyboards has clearly been honed to a dense, gleaming sheen, giving the record a deep, gorgeously textured feel. The cuts that feature Helium vocalist Mary Timony--"King Diamond" and "Tomb of Liegia" (the latter an eerie murder ballad)--are two the album's finest. Moreno still achieves a crushing sonic grandeur on guitar-dominated tracks ("Your Skull Is Red"), but floating, electronics-laced songs like "Ever (Foreign Flag)" truly make TEAM SLEEP a fresh, original offering.
Uncut (p.99) - 3 stars out of 5 - "[T]he spectral 'Tomb Of Liegia', featuring vocals from Mary Timony, is unquestionably gorgeous." CMJ (No. 912, p.8) - "[M]oody, gothy, late night fun..." Deftones is my favourite band Vocals of Chino are the same sensitive like in Deftones. The music sounds like the deftones songs went sleep and deam. It is slower and quiet but much more warmer and so much erotic. I believe every fan of Deftones would like to play this songs for his girlfriend. Definitely Not My Type of Music Deftones is one of my favorite bands and after my girlfriend told me about chino's side project i decided to get the cd. Nowhere near anything else i would listen to,but an experience all to its self so slow and dark it's amazing. definitley check it out . Great Album This is a great album. Sounds like Deftones (probably due to Moreno's voice)playing My Bloody Valentine songs and The Cure songs. If you like any of those bands, pick up this album. Submitted by John (California) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Team Sleep
$15.65 This popular Laibach album is available again in a limited edition digi-pack. Also included for the first time is a bonus enhanced track of a four minute film about this acclaimed band. Eastern european industrial experimentalists with a heavy political leaning, Laibach have often found themselves in conflict with authorities. Expressing their views strongly through their music both here and on their continued career with Mute records, they are still actively pursuing their own unique agenda. Laibach sell consistently well and this album will be serviced to all relevant music press/websites.
This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. As Laibach took on more and more of a direct musical identity outside Slovenia, as opposed to being seen as simply part of the Neue Slowenische Kunst, the group's music gained a similar focus, though admittedly one still aimed specifically at an avant-garde level. Nova Akropola readily captures the band's stone-faced fascination with propaganda, fascism, and ...
