Personnel: Marc Ribot (guitar); Brahim Fribgane (oud, percussion); Eric Hipp (tenor saxophone); Curtis Hasselbring, Josh Roseman (trombone); John Medeski (keyboards); Michael Rivard (acoustic bass, electric bass); Adam Deitch (drums); Mister Rourke (turntables). Audio Mixer: Scotty Hard. Recording information: Tonic, New York, NY (05/26/2004). Editor: Scott Craggs. Arrangers: Michael Rivard; Brahim Fribgane. Yet another Club d'Elf live set, Live at Tonic New York, NY 5/26/04 finds bassist and bandleader Mike Rivard and crew -- this time featuring special guests John Medeski on organ, Mister Rourke (of the Addison Groove Project) on turntables, and Marc Ribot on guitar, making it a meeting of the minds between the Boston and New York improv scenes -- in a low-key, groove-oriented frame of mind. Rather than existing as a backdrop for solos, the long, open-ended songs evolve slowly if at all, most of them cooking along at a low simmer for ten-plus minutes before almost imperceptibly shifting into something new. Those looking for sterling improvisational showboating might be disappointed by the overall no-sweat ethos of this two-disc set, but taken as a whole, it's an excellent snapshot of Mike Rivard's improvisational methods as well as an excellent chillout disc that occasionally (as on the spirited two-part "Berber Song") turns into something more exciting. ~ Stewart Mason Live At Tonic New York, Ny 5/26/04 Music Live At Tonic New York, Ny 5/26/04 Review

| | Solomon Burke That's Heavy Baby 1971-1973 CD (2005) (Import) Australia
Live At Tonic New York, Ny 5/26/04
$19.99 Raven presents the very best of Solomon Burke's recordings for MGM in the 1970s, many on CD for the first time. A pioneering soul singer, Burke's powerful voice and fervent emotionality were much-admired through the 1960s. At MGM, with arranger Gene Page, Solomon deftly crafted a commercial and contemporary sound - both urban pop ballads and rhythmic hymns to black empowerment, all framed around his impassioned voice. Using fractured, ...
| | Ike & Tina Turner Nutbush City Limits / Feel Good CD (1972) (Import) Bonus Tracks; Australia
Live At Tonic New York, Ny 5/26/04
$19.99 Raven presents two classic soul/funk albums by Ike & Tina Turner, "Nutbush City Limits" and "Feel Good" on one CD for the first time. Dominated by Tina Turner's powerful voice and volcanic stage presence and Ike's hard-driving guitar, the duo's incendiary, funked-up blend of rock and soul made them one of the most potent live acts of the early 1970s. These two storming albums saw the duo transplant the visceral frenzy of their stage act successfully into the studio. Complete ...

| | Ak-Momo Return To N.Y. CD (2005)
Live At Tonic New York, Ny 5/26/04
$13.79 Swedish Duo Plays Electronic Pop Music
AK-Momo: Anna Karin Von Malmborg, Mattias Olsson. Personnel: Anna Karin Von Malmborg (vocals); Mattias Olsson (Mellotron). AK-Momo's debut album, Return to N.Y., derives most of its otherworldly beauty from two elements. One is the duo's reliance on Mattias Olsson's collection of vintage electronics, including the Mellotron, the mighty Optigan (which is fast becoming the new hip old-school electronic instrument), and its cousin, the Orchestran. Most Optigan fans will rejoice upon hearing Return to N.Y., since the keyboard hasn't been featured this prominently on an album since Optiganally Yours' Exclusively Talentmaker in 2000; songs such as "Return to N.Y." itself are terrific showcases for the Optigan's unmistakable, dreamy, but playful sound. AK-Momo's other special ingredient is AK von Malmborg's voice: sweet, high-pitched, and more than a little eerie, it warrants comparisons to ...
