This deluxe 5-disc box set contains the complete NORMAN GRANZ' JAM SESSION original LP series #1 through #9.
One of the most influential men in jazz, Norman Granz was not even a musician. However, the famed impresario provided invaluable performance opportunities for jazz artists, raising the public profile of many who knew him. Presented on five discs, these jam sessions--which were scheduled and supervised by Granz--feature some of the very best jazz musicians of the 1950s.
Whether it's the inventive bebop solos of alto saxophonist Charlie Parker, the foot stomping swing of pianist Count Basie, or the cool, silky tones of tenor saxophonist Stan Getz, these sessions really sparkle. A jam or "cutting" session is, by its very nature, competitive, so listeners will hear a lot of fiery solos on these tracks, as each musician tries to up the ante. Spanning the years 1952-1954, this collection has many highlights, including "Ballad Medley" on Disc One, which moves through a series of standards. On this 13-minute track, it's marvelous to compare the saxophone styles of Parker, Ben Webster, and Johnny Hodges, as each displays their wares in perfect succession. Another highlight is Disc Five's "Lullaby in Rhythm," a tune that showcases the speed and dexterity of pianist Oscar Peterson, clarinetist Buddy DeFranco, and others. Listeners are treated to some high-flying solos on this box set, which offers up a truly exciting mix of swing and bebop.
Personnel: Freddie Green, Herb Ellis, Barney Kessel (guitar); Buddy DeFranco (clarinet); Johnny Hodges, Willie Smith, Benny Carter , Charlie Parker (alto saxophone); Flip Phillips, Illinois Jacquet, Stan Getz, Wardell Gray, Ben Webster (tenor saxophone); Dizzy Gillespie, Roy Eldridge, Charlie Shavers (trumpet); Bill Harris (trombone); Count Basie (piano, organ); Oscar Peterson (piano); Lionel Hampton (vibraphone); John Simmons , Ray Brown (double bass); Harry "Sweets" Edison, J.C. Produced under the personal supervision of Norman Granz The headline of this review appears on the back cover of the album jackets of so many classic Verve LPs in my collection. I've never owned the complete set of these Jam Sessions before, and haven't heard Apple Jam from the 2nd CD in over 20 years, but it sounds just as fresh and exciting now as it did so many years ago. On the whole, I believe these studio sessions have more staying power than the live Jam Session portions of the old JATP box sets from the 1950's (although I still hope to see them reissued in my lifetime). In his time, Norman Granz' productions were criticized in some quarters, but I believe this collection will demonstrate to today's listeners that Norman Granz knew what he was doing, and his productions were as much a benefit to the artists he recorded as they are for us who still enjoy these recordings. I'm particularly thrilled by the inclusions of Charlie Parker and Wardell Gray in the earlier sets, as well as the Jacquet/Phillips tenor team on the later volumes. There's something for everyone here!

Complete Norman Granz Jam Sessions
$31.45 "Walkin'" is taken at the kind of jaunty tempo that distinguished the Wynton Kelly-Paul Chambers-Jimmy Cobb rhythm axis. Paul Chambers' buoyant, effortless beat, his sure sense of harmony and swing, and his resounding brand of melodic bass (dig his little bowed break at the conclusion of "Walkin'") are the glue which hold these performances together. On "Walkin'" he and Jimmy Cobb lock up the groove as if swinging were the same as breathing, allowing Kelly to engage the trumpeter in a continual dialogue, feinting counterpoint and feeding him his favorite chords, then dropping away to allow Miles ...
| | Duke Ellington Piano In The Background CD (1960) Bonus Tracks; Reissue
Complete Norman Granz Jam Sessions
$7.69 At first glance, one might think that this album is another in a long line of standard-issue Duke Ellington compilations. However, this is a release created by the artist himself, and it presents sessions from May and June of 1960 with one of the best orchestras Ellington ever assembled. (Only the previously unissued "Harlem Air Shaft," one of five bonus tracks on the CD, was recorded in '61.)
The title of this collection is also something of a misnomer, since PIANO IN THE BACKGROUND prominently features the piano throughout. Each track boasts fabulous bluesy piano introductions, and, at the end of each tune, the ivories ...

| | Dizzy Gillespie Town Hall, New York City, June 22, 1945 CD (2005)
Complete Norman Granz Jam Sessions
$13.79 The historic live Town Hall sessions by Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker from 1945 have been discovered on an acetate pressing, and are transferred with digital enhancement to CD. Why this concert was not issued initially is understandable, but Ira Gitler's informative and insightful liner notes suggest they likely were misplaced. What Gitler's essential writing also reveals is that these dates were approximate by only weeks to the original studio recordings of these classics, and there was no small amount of controversy surrounding this revolutionary bebop. Clearly ...

$14.65 Long gone are the days when studying jazz alone could predicate a successful career as an artist (a musician in a monkey suit is another story). Such is the lesson learned by pianist Adrian Klumpes when he left his musical conservatory to pursue a broader spectrum. However, wanderlust can become lost without the structure of institution. Such was the case with Klumpes before discovering the abstract minimal looping of jazz by German producer Jan Jelinek. Although a dozen time-zones away, Klumpes began fussing with Jelinek's loops with his trio, Laurence Pike (keyboards) and Ben "Donny" Waples. The resulting 1+3+1 found the three working with Jelinek, giving them their first ...
