Personnel: Mannie Fresh (rap vocals, various instruments); David Banner (rap vocals, various instruments); Lil' Mo, Tateeze, Birdman , Reel , Six Shot, Charlie Pettaway. With a track list 30-long and a thousand things going on at once, The Mind of Mannie Fresh is just about as good a title as you could find for this crazy ride. The album brings to mind a Southern, crunked-up version of Prince Paul's Psychoanalysis: What Is It?, an album that could be seen as self-indulgent, but could also be seen as a rare journey through a busy producer's mind. Tracks like "Real Big," "How We Ride," and "Tell It Like It Is" are just some of the straight-ahead party pleasers with impact and grooves that stand up to any other chart-topping crunk. That shouldn't be too surprising considering the amount of massive tracks Fresh has helmed in the past, but his scatter-shot humor and crazed-player attitude haven't been explored this hardcore before, not even on a Big Tymers' record. He's hornier than ever too, which makes the "clean" edition of the album sound like a scratched, skip-filled affair. The skits are hilarious and with marching band percussion and soulful horns, Mannie's earned the "intro of the year" award for 2004. Not that he's ever going to be mistaken for Biggie, but his lyrical skills keep improving. He keeps it simple most of the time but adds little twists and stingers to his standard-issue chants. Offering Eminem-styled rebellion commentary, "Mayor Song" takes an entirely different lyrical route, and just when you tire of Mannie's mouth, Petey Pablo and David Banner show up. Clocking in at just less than 80 minutes -- 30 or so of those given up to skits and interludes -- The Mind of Mannie Fresh is a lot to take in. It could have been cut down to the hits and baller tracks, but then it wouldn't have been so special, so unique. Not for everyone, but defenders of Cash Money Records and those that think there's a lot more creativity in this Southern smoke music than it ever gets props for are going to be revisiting this album for years. ~ David Jeffries Familiar to most of the rap world as half of Big Tymers, Mannie Fresh was active in hip-hop for years before dropping his solo debut, THE MIND OF MANNIE FRESH, in 2004. While Fresh didn't shy away from the mic as a member of the aforementioned Southern duo, his role was primarily as a DJ and an expert beat creator (a prolific one, at that--he's the driving force behind almost the entire Cash Money catalogue). While fellow Big Tymer (and Cash Money founder) Bryan "Baby" Williams enlisted a number of major artists for his first record (as Baby AKA the #1 Stunna), Mannie Fresh boldly lets his voice stand on its own, with David Banner being the only high-profile guest star here. On THE MIND OF MANNIE FRESH, Fresh avails himself admirably as a rapper, layering sweet and often provocative rhymes over a variety of backing tracks of his own conception. On the breakbeat-boasting and Whodini-esque "Nothing Compares to Love" and the Al B. Sure!-interpolating "How We Ride," Fresh reminds the listener he was around in the early days of hip-hop, conjuring up the feel of times past. Mostly, however, Fresh's eyes are squarely focused on the future, with cutting-edge beats, particularly on "Chubby Boy" and the pulsating opening single, "Real Big." Not the best CD This CD has some tight beats and a few good songs. Cash money will never be the same since they broke up. It is weird hearing mannie fresh spit for a whole CD. Great producer and hook man but not for an entire cd. Submitted by lbeazysuge (Goldsboro, NC) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Fresh.. What more can I say? Mannie Fresh is an absolute legend of the game, A producer, a DJ and a rapper, and he's great at all his roles. I have just bought this album off the internet and I'm still awaiting for it to get here, but listening to the samples makes it sound sweet. I've got all big tymers albums, in which both Mannie n Baby are great, no.. fantastic.
Althought Mannie has left Cash Money, due to business or some shizz, he will still be a Cash Money hero, and will go on in his further solo career as one of the best. Submitted by Mike (Kent, UK) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
