| | Drums & Tuba Live CD Drums & Tuba Discography of CDs
Recorded during the summer of 2004, the first live album by Drums & Tuba is evenly divided between new and likely improvisational pieces and familiar songs from the trio's two albums on Ani Difranco's Righteous Babe label. (The more scattershot, fragmentary material from the group's earlier records has seemingly been retired.) Kicking off with the outstanding 12-and-a-half-minute improv "Eight Degrees in Buffalo," the set then moves into the electronic clatter of "The Donkey and the Walrus" before shifting into a lively, polyrhythmic take on the cool, dubby groove of Mostly Ape's opening track "Brain Liaters." Although Brian Wolff's tuba and other horns provide the group's most unique sonic signature, Live is primarily a showcase for drummer and electronics expert Anthony Nozero, whose rhythmic drive and tasteful sonic manipulations form the basis of every song. Live is an enjoyable portrait of a band that treats the stage and the studio as two separate venues, showing off their impressively concise, non-noodly take on jam band improvisations. ~ Stewart Mason
This is a great collection of Drums and Tuba material that spans a couple years of thier existence on the road. Between the years of 2002-2004, DT clocked in close to 200 shows a year and this recording does the job of capturing thier live show. Which up until now has been unavailable officially. A couple tracks are previously unreleased and stand up well to thier other material. A absolute must have for the DT fan!!

Purchase Live CD To buy, Click on price to add to cart | Bob Dylan Christmas In The Heart CD (2009)
Live album
$10.09 After the initial shock fades, the existence of CHRISTMAS IN THE HEART seems perhaps inevitable. After all, the thing Bob Dylan loves most of all are songs that are handed down from generation to generation, songs that are part of the American fabric, songs so common they never seem to have been written. These are the songs Dylan chooses to sing on CHRISTMAS IN THE HEART, a cheerfully old-fashioned holiday album from its Norman Rockwell-esque cover to its joyous backing vocals. Apart from the breakneck "Must Be Santa," which barrelhouses like a barroom, Dylan doesn't really reinterpret these songs as much as simply play them with his crackerjack road band, dropping in a little flair -- restoring "we'll have to muddle through somehow" to "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas," singing the opening of "O Come All Ye Faithful" in its original Latin -- but never pushing tunes in unexpected directions. Many would argue having Dylan croon these carols is unexpected enough and, true, there are times his gravelly rumble is a bit pronounced, but nothing here feels forced, it all feels rather fun, provided you're on the same wavelength as latter-day Bob, where the sound and swing of the band is as important as the song, where there's an undeniable nostalgic undertow to all the proceedings. ...
| | Trans-Siberian Orchestra Night Castle CDs (2009)
Live CD music
$11.35 NIGHT CASTLE appears just in time for the big 2009 holiday season but don't be fooled: this isn't a Christmas album, even if it's sonically indistinguishable from Trans-Siberian Orchestra's other seasonal releases, and the fact that it's been dubbed "Capra-esque" certainly brings it within the realm of the season. NIGHT CASTLE brims with all the drama, pomp, and circumstance of Trans-Siberian Orchestra's other records but channeling these traits through a newly created narrative does have the effect of hearing it in a somewhat new light, shifting the focus entirely to the band's attack, not melody. Still, there's not that much new here -- and the coda of seasonal covers, including the first sober version of "Nutrocker" ever cut, doesn't do much to break that spell. But for those already enchanted by the Orchestra, this will continue to enthrall.

| | Shakira She Wolf CD (2009)
Live songs
$11.18 Last time around, Shakira touched upon so many styles she couldn't be contained on one album, splitting Oral Fixation in two. This time, she focuses on one sound only: a pulsating electro-disco that crosses all boundaries and welcomes all nationalities. Such concentration behooves Shakira, freeing her to release her inner She Wolf, a wild wacko who's as coo coo as she is carnal. And for as sexy as Shakira is -- crucially, her music is sexy too -- what really gives She Wolf its bite is her inspired nuttiness, how she laments that Matt Damon's not meant for her, and wishes her ex-lover and his new girl a horrible vacation where the room smells and the toilet doesn't flush. "Darling, it is no joke, this is lycanthropy," she sings on the title track with no small trace of humor, and this blend of cheerful weirdness and sick beats -- often supplied by the Neptunes, delivering tough, sensual rhythms in a way they haven't in a long time, but also John Hill and Wyclef Jean -- is giddily addicting, a celebration of all the strange sensuality that comes out at night. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

| | Belin All The Way In CDs (2009) With DVD
Live album
$13.75 At times, it was hard to figure out whether Berlin were an average synth pop band trying to carve out their own niche or just a mediocre rock band jumping on the new wave bandwagon. Sure, they had some good singles and radio hits, but as an album band, they left a lot to be desired. Terri Nunn was beautiful and sexy, but it seemed like Berlin wanted to be more than just a commercial band with a hot vocalist: they seemed to be striving for greatness but settled for "that'll do." Unfortunately, they never had a chance to really prove themselves, breaking up after their commercially disappointing Count Three & Pray album, released in 1986. Nunn has kept the Berlin name alive over the years, touring with a different group of musicians and playing all the hits while releasing the occasional studio or live album. With a recorded output that seems to dwindle in quality with every release, one might hope that All the Way In would deviate from the standard "live hits" collection and offer up something really special. Sadly, that's not entirely the case. All the Way In was recorded live at The House of Blues in Anaheim, CA. The HOB is located very near the heart of the OC music scene, where Berlin started more than two decades ago. This homecoming show promised much but delivered very little.
Backed by three musicians who look like Nine Inch Nails refugees, Nunn is still as beautiful and sexy as ever, and her voice sounds great, but there doesn't seem to be much heart and soul, at least on the CD. Nunn pulls out all the live rock clichés she can muster while performing the big hits, dulling their overall ...

| | Mike Doughty Skittish/Rockity Roll CDs (2004)
Live album
$8.69 This double-disc set brings together two solo albums by former Soul Coughing frontman Mike Doughty. Doughty's nasal twang and associative, image-filled lyrics made Soul Coughing one of the most distinctive cult bands of the 1990s, and those qualities are in full flower on the singer/songwriter's solo efforts. But Doughty's outings differ from Soul Coughing's funky, busy, sample-based music with their stark and stripped-down feel.
With only his acoustic guitar as accompaniment, Doughty creates a dark and mesmerizing ambience on SKITTISH, leaving ample room for his evocative wordplay and his wiry guitar and vocal phrasing. Occasional overdubs, such as the orchestral tones in "No Peace, Los Angeles" or the organ and vocal harmony tracks on "The Only Answer," flesh out the intimate, personal atmosphere of the album. Acoustic guitar also lays the foundation for the tunes on ROCKITY ROLL, though drum machines and synthesizers give the whole a ...

| | Rhonda Smith RS2 CD (2006)
Live CD music
$17.69 One of the great aspects about having a steady, lucrative side gig -- in the case of versatile bassist, singer and songwriter Rhonda Smith, nearly ten years playing with Prince -- is the freedom to create a solo project that happily defies any easy genre categorization. Of course, it's also nice to have Prince himself in the house, lending a promotional quote ("This is Rhonda...and she is funky!") and his crunchy lead and rhythm guitars to the old-school soul)-(\rock jam "Time." Smith says it all about the eclectic nature of her disc in the half-minute industrial vibing intro called "What Do They Think Music Is." She answers that in many ways throughout RS2, beginning with the adventurous, sensuous soul meets trippy electronica tune "To Get with You," and engaging in some biting commentary about an emotionally stunted lover on the sparse, percussive neo-soul-jazz piece "Lost Child." "Always" moves into progressive urban smooth jazz territory, with Smith focusing more on the melodic capabilities of her axe, accompanied by Ron James' soprano sax and some gently echoing background vocals. "Why Criticize" takes this same road, complementing its long intro with a brief dose of Smith's most beautiful vocals. There are also some percussive jazzy elements on the hypnotic closer "Ray of Light." Smith never stays in one place too long, however zipping next to the swampy, front porch blues declaring her love for "Country Music." "Sunshine" is like an avant-garde mishmash of gospel, electronica, jazz and world percussion -- bright as promised -- while "It's You" is a sweet but very conventional mid-tempo duet with gospel legend Fred Hammond. If there's a mainstream hit here, that's the one; it's not the most original tune in the bunch, but it's a safe entry point to Smith's intensely creative free-for-all world. ~ Jonathan Widran
