461 Ocean Boulevard is Eric Clapton's second studio solo album, arriving after his side project of Derek and the Dominos and a long struggle with heroin addiction. Although there are some new reggae influences, the album doesn't sound all that different from the rock, pop, blues, country, and R&B amalgam of Eric Clapton. However, 461 Ocean Boulevard is a tighter, more focused outing that enables Clapton to stretch out instrumentally. Furthermore, the pop concessions on the album -- the sleek production, the concise running times -- don't detract from the rootsy origins of the material, whether it's Johnny Otis' "Willie and the Hand Jive," the traditional blues "Motherless Children," Bob Marley's "I Shot the Sheriff," or Clapton's emotional original "Let It Grow." With its relaxed, friendly atmosphere and strong bluesy roots, 461 Ocean Boulevard set the template for Clapton's '70s albums. Though he tried hard to make an album exactly like it, he never quite managed to replicate its charms. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
After playing the 1973 Rainbow Concerts that were arranged by good friend Pete Townshend, Eric Clapton returned to Florida's Criteria Recording Studio to cut 461 OCEAN BOULEVARD. Because of a stint of personal turmoil, Clapton had not played guitar for two years preceeding the Rainbow Concerts, but with the help of a core group of musicians including George Terry, former Derek & the Dominos bassist Carl Radle, Jamie Oldaker, and Yvonne Elliman, Slowhand put together an album that many consider to be his best.
Focusing more on his singing than his guitar pyrotechnics of the past, the new, improved Clapton used a laid-back, J.J. Cale-type vocal style to great effect on a mellow version of "Willie And The Hand Jive" and Elmore James's "I Can't Hold Out." Far from being a kinder, gentler guitar hero, Clapton also showed considerable spark on a slide-drenched "Motherless Children" and the driving "Mainline Florida," which closes out the album. Of course, his cover of Bob Marley's "I Shot The Sheriff" was the musical statement that took him to the top of the charts and let the general public know he was back. 461 OCEAN BOULEVARD is still one of the highest points of Clapton's solo career.

5 stars A superb SACD
I can vouch only for the 5.1 SACD layer, and it's truly excellent. The mix makes good use of the rear speakers, and tonally it's gorgeous. Buy!!!

5 stars Ultimate Version
Yes, this is the ultimate version in my humble opinion. Better than the DTS version and far superior to any CD version. The surround mix sounds fantastic and really shines on the non-hit tracks like "Mainline Florida", "Motherless Child", "Willie & The Hand Jive" and "I Can't Hold On". There was a reason this album was so successful and it wasn't just because of a cover version of a Bob Marley song. This is the best Clapton album of his career and the SACD Surround version does more than justice to it!

4 stars one of the best ever
I have been in tune to this album since it was recorded. It has an overall roundness to it that can appeal to various audiences. It has a way of making the conection. I am a drummer and simply love Motherless Children. Jamie Oldaker does a fantastic job on that and the entire album. It is always on or near the top of the stack.

2 stars missing the treble
this sacd suffer from lost treble... the sound is muffled. the remastered cd of the same title sounds better than this one. eric clapton performance and the music are first rate. i dislike the idea of universal music glued the "electronic security tag" onto the back inlay paper card, which resulted in damage to the paper when you try removing it. urgghh....

3 stars Not a great sounding release
First off, I love this record. I am commenting on the mastering of this release. I have this record on a MOFI cd and the MOFI release from a few years ago is much better than the SACD sound. This release suffers from heavy digital compession and bright equlization that quite a few remasters suffer from. By trying to update the sound they are destroying the vibe that these recordings once had. If you have the MOFI cd, don't waste your money, if you are buying it for the first time, this is the one to have. (The MOFI cd is nolonger available.)

Remastered German reissue with bonus tracks and a 12-page booklet featuring rare photos.
After dispensing with his services in December 1967, the remaining members of Traffic reinstated Dave Mason in the group in the spring of 1968 as they struggled to write enough material for their impending second album. The result was a disc evenly divided between Mason's catchy folk-rock compositions and Steve Winwood's compelling rock jams. Mason's material was the most appealing both initially and eventually: the lead-off track, a jaunty effort called "You Can All Join In," became a European hit, and "Feelin' Alright?" turned out to be the only real standard to emerge from the album after it started earning ...
